I recommend Urban Indigo (http://urbanindigo.com/) if you're in the East Bay. It has vintage glass ornaments and locally made things. Plus it is just a really great shop.

I store mine in the fridge, but rather than wrapped in plastic, I place the cut side down on a small plate and store it in the fridge unwrapped. It stores just as well and is less messy (no overly wet plastic). Plus when I cut another slice, I just grab it off the plate and put it right back.

I store asparagus standing up in a cup or small bowl with a little bit of water at the bottom in my fridge. I manage to keep stems stored like that for a week without any of them going wilty.

I've had less success with plastic bags, personally.

I like to let my rounds rise in a colander that's been lined with a flour covered tea towel. After shaping, I stick in in the colander seam-side up. When the bread is ready to go in the oven, I just turn the whole thing over on the baking sheet.
The colander helps the bread keep that nice round shape. For whatever reason, rounds tend to get all oval and flat if I let them rise on the counter all by themselves.

From the actual study:

"Unless we are vigilant, high-density zealots will do their best to reverse centuries of gains and drive us back towards a Dickensian gloom. Revealing information sources such as the Survey are an invaluable resource to counter attempts to herd us backwards into an archaic past. "

Ha! Apparently living in cities is the "archaic past". Suburbs are so futuristic!

I really wish people would stop posting about those Helvetica cookie cutters! They're awesome, but they aren't for sale so I'd rather not be reminded about them every 3 months. :/

Fenton MacLaren in Berekeley makes unfinished storage cubes that might be the right size. They have backs to them, but since they make custom furniture, I'm betting that you can get them without the backs.

Lordy. Madeleines. I'm not much of a cook but I really like baking and I bought a madeleine pan on a whim one day. I spent every weekend for the next several months making the damned things, trying to figure out why they were never right. Now I can give away some truly awesome cookies as gifts.

I have a feeling that if I ever try my hand at pie crust, it'll be all quiche and pie for weeks.

I got a sourdough starter as a gift a little over a year ago. i was making tiny loaves every other day for months. I still make a loaf every week or so.

Comfortable is one of my favorite compliments. Mostly because before I moved into the place I'm in now, I tended to be crap at decorating so the idea that I'd put a studio together in a way that makes you want to come over and hang out is makes me really happy. I also get variations on 'awesome' a lot, which is partly me and partly the fact that my apartment itself is in, in fact, awesome. The other thing that I've been told is that my apartment reflects me really well. Which I think is pretty much the most important thing to get out of your space.

This post inspired me to go measure my rather large studio. I guess I have between 450-500 sq ft including my kitchen, bathroom, and closets. I'm really happy with this exact amount of space but only because I have a ton of closet space and can tuck things way.

I could comfortably live in this much space with another person but only if it were a 1 bedroom and not a studio. Having some visual and sound separation would be totally key for my happiness.

Oh man. I go back and forth between wanting to live in a tumbleweed tiny house and wanting a 2 bedroom house all to myself.

A map room/library & a darkroom are what I really want.

The framed flat screen gets a thumbs up from me. I had this very same idea the first time I saw a flat screened TV. I'm pleased to see I'm not the only one!

My mom always estimates yards of fabric by putting one end at the tip of her nose and the stretching the fabric across the length from there to her finger tip. It totally works, you just need to do with a tape measure a couple of times to figure out how far to stretch your arms/turn your head to one side.
