Um. Well, yes, cracks and crevices, that's a given. I'm talking about the receptacle that the dirt goes into in lieu of a bag. That is a lot of crap that is being re-introduced to the atmosphere when you clean it out.

As a person with dust allergies, the concept of a vacuum that you have to clean out is insane to me. To clean, you must touch and release dust and dirt into the air that you are trying to avoid by using an expensive vacuum, which defeats the purpose. This seems like an enormous design flaw.

When I faced this dilemma, I used a similar solution that notjanedoe and MeganMarguerite suggested. I bought very cheap curtain rings from ikea http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90151834, with a thin circumference. I attached them to the top of the curtain panel, and snapped the hook (carefully!) into the clips that previously held the slats. The valance hid the hooking mechanism. This worked really well, and was cheap solution. I liked the ability to use the pulley mechanism...

I am not a fan of the of the tv being so low to the ground...I always think the proportions look weird. I second arroyo's very good points, particularly about the odd and obvious truncation of a lovely piece of furniture.

Interestingly, the Pioneer Lofts building used to house a four story antique mall that was AWESOME.

I worked in the Gaslamp from '87-'92 before it became "The Gaslamp". There used to be many thrift shops in that area, including the Goodwill "as is" store, which rocked. Gone are all of the artists work spaces, vintage stores antiques, and thrift shops...I'm sure they've been priced out of the neighborhood.

I haven't lived in SD for almost twenty years, and every time I go back, it seems like the Gaslamp looks more and more like Main Street at Disneyland, very faux-city-esque. However, I can understand, SewTrashy, why you would chose this area for it's convenience and walk-ability. There aren't many neighborhoods in SD that offer that...

To find good thrifting, you probably need to go to places like El Cajon, La Mesa, or Lemon Grove. I think that there is an AM Vets that is right off of the 5 fwy, near Washington that is fairly close to you, that used to be really good one, and I think it's still there.

Be cautious about bringing one home...they don't fit through doors easily, and very difficult to get up stairs. Hard to give away too...thrift shops in my area won't take them, interested people on craigslist don't have a vehicle to transport. I couldn't believe how hard it was to get rid of that beast!

I DO use a ceramic egg crate for my jewelry...for rings and earrings, even my watch. Obviously not going to work for chains, but works well for other stuff. I'm going to keep my eyes open for that beautiful letter press calendar for 2011. Would be very much appreciated in my household.

My husband and I used to own a wine shop. As you can imagine, wooden cases are coveted. Mostly, it's $100 plus wines that come in cases like this, so it's high end wine shops that where you should look for a proprietor that is willing to give them up, they may sell this for an inexpensive price. If you have access or know anyone that works for a bev distributor, this is also a promising option, as more often than not, expensive wines that come in these cases end up being sold by the distributor by the bottle rather than the case.
Bought some display wooden crates from these folks, http://tiny.cc/wrlh9. They were the most reasonable prices and were very nice!

$1850 1 bedroom/1000 sq ft - San Francisco, 1920's building near the Presidio, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Very fairly priced for quality of the apt, and for this neck of the woods,

$2200 1 bedroom/600 sq ft - Honolulu, building was built in 1969. Downtown, high rise with an ocean view.

The price to quality ratio in Honolulu made me think that SF was cheap!

EGGS!
My complete and utter disgust for eggs goes as far as mayonnaise, "creamy" dressings, meringue, and other lemony desserts where I can often detect an eggy undertone flavor.

Ditto greenbayou. I love seeing creativity and appreciating another point of view, even if it isn't my taste.
Honestly, as much as I love the mid century aesthetic, it's getting a little tiresome to look at so many of the cliche furniture/color palettes and austere staged looking places that are often profiled. Hooray for creativity and uniqueness! Thanks for sharing your home.

Will never purchase a upholstered furniture from R&B again. Have had two sofas and two chairs. The first set (The Flynn) fell apart within a year, the upholstery tore on both pieces.... R&B repaired the sofa, then the chair started falling apart. After the second incident, R&B just decided to replace/credit us for a new furniture. The sofa, by the way, had two cushions which never met up in the middle, always a little off, which drove me nuts.

The replacement was "Tulane". Was comfortable for a few months, and then the cushions flattened. My husband and I now call it the "torture" sofa. It is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable. When you sit on it, that back of your thighs painfully rest against the the wood frame, and your butt sinks to the bottom.

I wish I would have just bought the MG in the first place, and MG will most likely be my next purchase. They have some new, more affordable sofas, the Love program, and, I believe they offer 20% off custom upholstery twice per year. I am sure to take advantage of one of these programs.

I like the idea, but it seems like this would be filthy immediately, and perhaps not withstand cleaning very well.

Our current sofa is called "Tulane"...they don't offer it any longer. It looks much like their current "Westwood", just without the arms...so you can see that we don't have loose cushions, that it is a bench style.

More about cushions....the reason that I chose the "Tulane" for our second sofa was that the first (similar to "Eugene") along with the aforementioned BIG problems it had, the cushions drove me nuts. It had two long cushions, that never quite met-up in the middle....the shape seemed a little off, or the upholstery slipped a little. Of course, my eye went directly to that target where the cushions did not quite meet up...this would have eventually made me lose my mind! I could only see this situation getting worse, so for our second sofa, I looked for something with less cushions to bother with.

I have a friend in San Francisco who was shopping for sofas at the same time...she went to the R&B store and gave me a very detailed rundown of the quality of the cushions. She thought they were all crap...she opted for the Crate and Barrel "Petrie".

Good luck emilybeth...based on my experience, I would run the other direction. The Dublin has a lot of cushion to be reckoned with!
