we always decorate the tree on Dec. 6 (st. Nicholas Day). The night before, everyone leaves out their shoes to find them filled with candy and a gift the next morning. Christmas Eve includes a church service and a trip to drive around looking at lights. "It's a Wonderful Life," at least one version of "A Christmas Carol" and "christmas Vacation" are must-sees during the season. Then, Jan 6 the tree comes down without fail. It's Epiphany, so the night before, the kids lay out their shoes again for the wise Men to put in a small gift and some candy. I was thinking the exact opposite: white walls and black gloss wainscoting (white trim). It would make the fixtures and tile pop. Then soften the look with thick, puffy towels and bath mats in any color you like. Alternately, you could use white on the wainscoting and black trim. You mentioned vintage a couple of times, but you didn't say what era. You're well on your way to Deco with the tile work, which would lend itself to lots of silver, and you could romanticize it with some softer touches like the design in your shower curtain and perhaps some other bits of glam. I don't think it's fair to say these rooms were transformed by color when so much else was done. Both of them have completely different furniture and accessories. The claustrophobic feeling in #1 Before that @Rainarana mentioned has more to do with the fact that it was shot about 10 feet closer to the fireplace, and with a couch twice the size of that in the #1 After shot.
