My mother used to yell at me when I would get upset about the sound of her eating and drinking.

My husband still gets his feelings hurt when I have to leave the room or ask him to quiet down when he is eating.

I have suffered with this problem as long as I can remember. Lucky for me I was raised by a single mother who cannot keep her mouth closed when she eats and when she drinks the sound is so loud it is painful to me.

I have never physically lashed out, though I have wanted to. Eating and drinking noises drive me up the wall; I have felt pure rage at the sound of someone sucking on a piece of candy, wanted to break the jaw of a gum popper and have come close to throttling moviegoers who don't understand the amount of popcorn they can realistically fit into their mouths. The sound of popcorn squeaking across teeth as someone shoves fistfuls into their face only to chew with their mouth wide open. I have moved seats in theaters. I usually request corner booths in restaurants. Plus, I try to go to noisy eateries to help drown out the sounds.

I have had to stop eating because all I could hear was myself chewing and swallowing.

I always thought I suffered from a sensory processing issue as I also have troubles with sounds not related to food and I have tactile issues as well as issues with my fingertips and toes.

Yay! Crazy me.

When I was a kid I remember checking corn for worms with my grandmother in the store. To this day I still check my corn no matter where I purchase it!

When I lived alone before, I ate a lot of beans and rice. Now that I'm married and am used to cooking, I tend to cook the same things I would if someone were here. Plus with this time of year I am doing a lot of grilling even when my spouse is gone.

I have dedicated an entire cabinet to seasonings, but my most often used are salt (I have about 5 types), fresh ground pepper, ridiculous amounts of chile powder, obscene quantities of minced garlic, cumin and paprika. With grilling season in full swing I have also been using a lot of honey in marinades.

Spooner here as well, except instead of cutting them in half, I just cut off a bit of the top and spoon out the rest.

We just moved and are still unpacking our kitchen, however I had to locate my blendtec blender and one of my crock pots. I also have the Cuisinart immersion blender many previous posters have and I can't imagine living without it, especially when using it in a pot of hot food. I wouldn't use it as a replacement for the hand mixer I got rid of, however my KA stand mixer does that job. We also ditched the ice cream maker before the move.

My favorite string cheese is mozzarella, whichever brand is on sale.

In bustling Huntsville, AL I'm paying $500 for a 2 bedroom, one bath apartment in downtown. No idea of square footage- but we have a huge pantry, separate dining room and plenty of closets.

Its a small building with a nice courtyard and no pet fees. Also, water and heat are included.

Alabama here. My household is strictly no shoes for my husband and I. We are fortunate that our current apartment has a foyer with a coat closet, plus I installed a few shelves at the bottom for shoes. Close friends and family usually take their shoes off, however we don't ask visitors to remove shoes (even though I would like to sometimes).

As for the dog issue, we have an inside dog (toy poodle) who is allowed on two pieces of furniture: the leather couch and his "bed"/pillow. We have a paw wiping towel in the foyer that we use whenever he goes out.

I agree with everyone else on the evoo spray. I do homemade popcorn in the microwave a la Alton Brown. I do a couple of short bursts of evoo then a sprinkle of kosher salt that has been through the bullet blender and pop in a brown paper bag.

"No one should expect cat hair in their food--even cat owners like myself!"
Thank you dcirene

I have grown up with dogs and I have never been okay with animal hair, or even human hair, in my food. We have a small dog that is rarely allowed into the kitchen and every surface and tool is cleaned before and after cooking.

My husband and I don't eat at certain people's homes because of their apparent lack of awareness regarding animal hair in the food and drink. We even saw a cat lay down on a pie only to have it shooed away and the pie was still served and eaten (not by us)!

We had a horrible problem with roaches in our apartment when we first moved in 3 years ago. They wre all coming from outside, mostly living in the monkey grass. I started liberally sprinkling Borax on all the monkey grass, the stairs leading up to the building, the porch and even the foyer when you first enter the building. We are the first apartment so they always seemed to come to us. I kept up the borax for a solid year, dispensing it every two weeks and now we rarely see any roaches inside or out.

I have given up money, by choice. I figured I was already good at being poor from when I was in school so why not. I did a year with AmeriCorps (subsistence living) and then I was unemployed for three months before taking a part time job. I figured I would just get another part time job to bring in more money, but then I realized how much I could experience.

I don't remember the last time I didn't work 40-60 hours a week.

So I crunched the numbers and figured out that my small salary will allow me to pay all of the bills and still have some fun and save a little. I am enjoying the time I now have to dedicate to hobbies, spending time with family and friends, and the lack of stress that comes with a full time corporate office job.

I don't think I can do this for an extended period of time, but this year I am going to spend more time and less money!

Concrete Screws!

I live in an old apartment building with brick directly behind the lathe/plaster walls. The best advice I got when we moved in was to use concrete screws if we wanted to attach anything to the walls. So far I have not had any problems with anything hanging on the walls, including the gigantic mirror directly above the fireplace. Oh, and the hint about painters tape is so right on, I wish I would have discovered that in the beginning.

I agree with Fatica. **Tea tree oil*** has saved my sanity when it comes to mildew. It is a natural antiseptic.

About 1 tbsp. mixed with 1c hot water in a spray bottle will to the trick. The best part is: spray on, wait 30sec-1min, wipe off! I always repeat at least one more time to get anything that is left behind that I can't see.
