I know this sounds counterintuitive, but would you consider a white slipcoverd couch? Being a neutral, you can change the look with pillows and you can also bleach the heck out of the slipcovers. I have had mine from Rowe for almost 10 years and the slipcovers are finally showing their wear so I will get some new ones. But that sucker has survived 2 cats, 1 dog, 1 toddler, countless chocolate/red wine/blood/dear god what is that? stains. Fabric is white denim so durable.

Don't have a picture, but my friend's rental house has a wall in her kitchen which the owner installed cork, framed it with molding and then painted it the same color as the wall so it blends well with the room. Great for posting pictures, artwork, cards, etc. I am SO doing this when we move into our first home.

Baby products are just a matter of taste - for you and also what your baby ends up liking and using.
My biggest suggestion is to get the bare minimum and borrow the rest from friends to test it out before you invest. Once you know you both like a product you can easily pick up items used for so much cheaper.

The site may be more streamlined, but to me it just appears way too bland and uninspiring. Also - tried the search engine and every link which came up only linked to an error page! So frustrating! Ohdeedoh was a great resource for articles and ideas about kids. I want information about families with kids, not just families in general. I hope it changes back. What a terrible idea to smush eveything together into one.

I am soon to be a first time Mom too (any day now!). We went with the Angelcare Monitor just for the piece of mind alone. She will be sleeping in the same room as us (due to lack of space in our condo) but it will be worth it to know that she is breathing fine so I can catch some Zzz's myself. Once she gets over 6 months I will likely just use the sound. I have to be pretty frugal with our funds - but if you use coupons you can get the single unit Angelcare for less then $80 easy. A good sound unit would be around $50 - so you are really only talking another $30 for the movement function.

I am pregnant with our first (girl, 8+ months now!) with my shower next weekend. Anything not on our registry I either got in hand-me-downs (love that) or we are going to pass on due to lack of space in our condo. Some items that would be great gifts but you can't really register for would be:
1) A nursing PJ set for Mom. (If she is planning on breastfeeding)
2) Gift cards for post-baby: Food/Meals, Maid/Laundry service, photography session for new family etc.
3) A homemade baby book - you can make one on Snapfish of pics of large pictures of family/friends/animals in baby's life. Love this idea.
4) Do they have a good camera/video camera? Not sure how much you want to spend.
5) I got our baby an iHome dock station which I plan to use with my ipod for baby's sound machine/silly song player. It also lights up as a nightlight and can stobe different colors so she will love it when she is a little older too: http://www.amazon.com/iHome-Color-Changing-Speaker-System-Subwoofer/dp/B001NJ0PBG/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1294441272&sr=8-28
6) Itunes gift cards for baby music/sound machine effects AND they have really great apps out there now which track baby better then an ItzBeen. Very cool.
Other then that, I would recommend that if you buy anything outside her registry make sure that it has a good return policy and give receipts! Everyone's tastes (and babies) are different.
