Okay, now I'm sorry I looked at the translated page with the extra images. He's got a huge collection of excellent Scotches as well. I'm picturing myself lying around all day watching my favorite movies and sipping Laphroig.

My last comment wasn't a response to yours, Matt23, but to the previous one, as you can probably tell! I agree that the aggrieved tone of the post is bothersome -- AT shouldn't have expected the Times to approach them about this first.

Most seasoned journalists have to make it their business to understand the nuances of fair use, so don't worry -- you don't need to explain them to us.

The Times is entirely within its rights to deny the unauthorized use of its images. It's not a matter of paying the people or websites one writes about -- I'm sure the paper generated its own images and copy for all the stories Pixie mentions, or obtained permission to use any others. If you can't secure permission, don't use the content.

As I think others have mentioned, it's only fair to the photographers that the paper go to bat for them on this issue, if that's what's happening. We freelancer writers and photographers make pocket change for our work these days. And the Times gets to decide whether it needs the extra traffic it might gain through AT. This discussion reminds me of situations where people (who clearly needed the publicity more than I did, though that's neither here nor there) have posted my articles online without my permission and then when I complained insisted that I should be grateful for the publicity. It doesn't matter what they think about it, but what I do sure does.

I love many things about Apartment Therapy, but a little humility and respect would be appropriate here.

Oops, make that "mention." And I'd add that there's something enchanting about knowing a young ballerina lives in that lovely, old-world-style apartment, which indeed seems perfect for a dancer.

Well put, JH4285. I enjoyed reading this story for the reasons you meantion.

I adore this apartment, and I certainly wouldn't move the bathroom -- imagine taking a bath in there on a summer evening with the terrace door open? The decor is blah, but, to be fair, the occupant is indeed young and the piece appeared in the real estate section, where decor is not meant to be the focus. The lovely dancer seems charming, though I agree that only the immensely privileged get to have their parents buy them a studio for half a million bucks!

Wow, where's the sourness in some of these responses coming from? Pets can be such an important part of a happy home, and I'd rather see a post like this than many that just push products. I'm glad the new First Family is trying to go the shelter route and I'm kind of hoping they manage to find a Portuguese water dog.

I give money to my charming super each holiday season, but I wouldn't dream of including a thank you card with my rent check. Thank you for what? For overcharging me for a tiny, rundown apartment?

I suppose you could also sew the fabric scraps into little bags -- just sew three sides and turn inside out and fill with nuts, candy, or surprise gifts for each other and tie with ribbon and hang from the branches.

If you have any dollar bags of Mardi Gras beads lying around, you could give each strand a snip and tie them together to make multicolored garlands (although maybe they'd be a bit slender on a big tree? I did this on a very small tree once and it looked lovely with brightly colored glass ornaments).

My grandmother used to make pretty ornaments from prickly husk things (maybe they came from chestnuts?) -- she'd glue little faux pearls between the prickles and hang with shimmery cord.

She also made ornaments from shells -- gluing in a faux pearl or decoupaging a little picture inside. For a simpler look, if you eat a lot of oysters or clams, you could hang the plain shells all over the tree for a seaside theme...

Would love to see pictures of what you end up doing!

People are posting great ideas!

Meant to post this earlier but had trouble:

Could you just cut the fabric into strips and tie bows? As for garlands, I think cranberries are easier to string than popcorn. And pomander balls (oranges or lemons studded with cloves), which smell divine, can be encircled with a couple of loops of ribbon and hung on a tree.

When my parents were first married, my mother -- like mamaspank's friend -- used artificial birds, flowers, and fruit, as well as, I think, ribbons tied on branches. I believe the birds and fruit (we still use them sometimes) were prettier than many of the ones available now, but there must be nice ones to be found. Even just pretty satin ribbon in a chosen palette tied in bows all over the tree could look lovely.

And then one Christmas we baked gingerbread men with loops and hung them on the tree. Unfortunately, come morning all the ones near the bottom had been reduced to hanging heads and our cocker spaniel had a bit of a stomachache (she also ate a few candy canes off the tree).

My mother loved finding ways for us kids to make ornaments that she could hang as well. I only remember some plaster ones that we painted rather sloppily -- those were her favorites but there were others.

I'm extremely cash-strapped, and I'm all for this. I went for a walk by the East River yesterday and saw bags EVERYWHERE -- in the trees, in the bushes, in the water. It has to stop.

I have a couple of canvas bags that I got for free. I don't carry them around all the time, of course, so sometimes do end up accepting the plastic but for a holiday gift I'm going to ask for one of those cool cloth ones that you can roll up and put in your purse.

Well, I don't know. If I'd bought the Crystal Climbers thinking they were a rare "modernist" toy and then discovered that they could be purchased new for $19.95, I might think I'd been cheated. And if I did I'd probably be right. The weak economy is no excuse for this sort of thing.

The toy at the bottom is called Crystal Climbers. My brother and I played with it during the seventies (that photo brings back nice memories). A super-cool toy, but I doubt it's worth $75, as you can still buy Crystal Climbers online, in a slightly different color scheme, for $19.95.
