I live in a 300 sqft studio in Brooklyn and I buy toilet paper in bulk; I have it delivered every 6 months via Amazon subscribe & save. I store it under my bed and in my laundry closet on a shelf above my dryer. I also buy items at Costco, like vinegar and baking soda (which are probably the most versatile and general purpose items I buy), booze and fish that I can cram into my freezer.

I've become very efficient in my use of space (sewing machine and snow boots under the kitchen sink? check.), and in spite of having lots of stuff, my place isn't cluttered and feels remarkably spacious and open.

I'd leave the kitchen island where it currently is in the photos and put the dining table against the wall to the right of the fridge (otherwise, you're going to have to walk around the island and table every time you need to get to your fridge). If you're willing to get rid of the dining table, I would suggest putting an IKEA Expedit 4x4 (or 5x5 if it will fit) with a desk attachment against the fridge wall. It will give you a TON of storage space, plus an eating surface without taking up a colossal amount of space. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20116071/#/40116070

I think it's fine to leave the bed where it is, but maybe put a curtain or a screen at the foot of the bed to separate it a bit and then you'd have a place to put a bookshelf, desk, cabinet, landing strip , etc. at the foot of the bed for when you enter the apartment.

Not my taste, but definitely an improvement.

I don't understand the placement of the fridge, though. It seems to do more to cut off the kitchen than those half-walls did. I'd put the fridge where the stove is so it wouldn't be blocking out the window.

Looks great, but unfinished. The stenciling isn't complete at the top left corner and the bottom near the cabinet and floor trim.

I lived car-free in DC for 5 years and have now lived car-free in NYC for 11. I used to belong to Zipcar, but found that I just didn't use it enough (and it was such a pain trying to reserve the things when I wanted them. If I wanted a Zipcar to run errands on a weekend, I found I often needed to reserve MONTHS in advance, or reserve a car in some far-fetched part of the city that would take me an hour to get to via train in the first place.

The only time I really need a car is to go out of town for a long weekend or to drive to OH for a week at a time to visit family. Parking can be such a pain in the neck, that I generally prefer to just take my shopping cart and enjoy a nice long walk to places like Trader Joe's. When it comes to IKEA, I happily pay the $59 they charge to deliver all your stuff to your door later in the day.

I suppose if I had a car for a day, I'd collect all the stuff I want to get rid of (I have a lot) and take it to Goodwill or a thrift store. If there's one thing I'd love to see offered in cities like NYC it's a mobile donation center of some sort. A big truck that would park in different neighborhoods, tweet out locations and times, and accept donations from those of us who have a hard time finding easy ways to donate our stuff.

It went from looking like an early 90s dorm room, to looking like the home of a granny in her early 90s.

Not really my style, but it's definitely an improvement.

A big French market style basket or two to store soft throws or magazines would help, since they are round.

Also, a tall ficus or palm in a big round planter would help add some softness and depth to the room.

Pink and Purple: Do or Don't?

Most of my friends who have kids seem to regress in the living-like-a-grownup category, what with the kinderkrap taking up residence in every nook and cranny (as well as just about every place that isn't a nook or cranny) in the home.

For me, it's having:

1. A well-stocked pantry and freezer that allows me to whip up just about any recipe I find without having to make a mad dash to a bodega to pick up 90% of the ingredients.

2. Meaningful art and decor that I've accumulated from friends, family, or the many places I've visited, rather than generic, ubiquitous items from chain retailers.

3. An emergency evacuation bag and supplies for sheltering in place.

4. An oil decanter, a really nice pepper grinder and a salt pig by my stove.

Love the feel of this home. While some of it is not necessarily my style, I love that is seems to really suit the occupant. There's a comfortable, easy style about it.

And what I would give to have an outdoor space like that! So inviting.

Personally not a fan of the pattern, but why contact paper? Seems it would be so easy to tear/peel/shred/crack.

I live in a brand new apartment (constructed in 2011) and I have a large window in my shower as well, so it's not just an old trend. I actually like it because I like the ventilation and light it provides, as well as a place to put all my stuff. I'm on the 4th floor and look out over a side street, so I definitely wanted some privacy but without trying to install some ugly curtain or shade.

I put some window film on the bottom half (I'm high enough up that only the bottom half needed to be covered) that resembles frosted glass and it works really well. It's been on there for about 9 months now and no peeling whatsoever. It had a lot of bubbles in it when I first applied it (I think it's really a two-person job), but I was too lazy to take it off an start over, so I just left it as-is. Thankfully, after about a week, every last one of the bubbles worked its way ou and now it is perfectly smooth.

These curtains seem to be geared toward the 12 year old girl market.

I have a few white curtains that I switch out from time to time - one is a white seersucker, one is a white waffle, and one is a white linen.

Going to echo what others have said: it looks like a trememdous transformation, but we don't really get a sense of it - just a sense of their belongings. I'd much rather see a shot of the whole bathroom rather than a shot of toothpaste in a cup.

And I'm with Ruthtooth - I like the 'before' kitchen wallpaper. I probably would've tried to save a few pieces of it and either framed them or had them made into laquered trays or something.
