Food for sure, emails and phone calls or (short, planned) visits. And don't forget moms having their second or later babies... the very best thing has been friends who took my older child out so I could have a break at the end of my second pregnancy! I definitely don't need onesies this time around, but time is the best gift! Also, anything handmade has been treasured.

Oh, yes. It drives me nuts to have dinner things on the table when it's time for dessert.

I agree that there is a lot of "design-store" stuff for babies and kids these days that is really more about adults. But that doesn't apply to any of the things in this post. These are all great classic toys that are also not unattractive. And legos are an amazing combination of mass-produced (affordable and readily available) and completely open-ended (as long as you get the basic ones and not super-specific sets).

I've been annoyed way more times by obnoxious adults on airplanes than by kids.

I took out my copy to play to my 2 year old when he informed me that "big boys don't cry." Unfortunately, too many of the old stereotypes are alive and well...

Please vet things a little more! Drinking coffee, tea and soda doesn't dehydrate you. Spicy foods can cool you off in exactly the same way as hot drinks. I don't think that generations of people in the south would have cooled off by drinking iced tea if it was really dehydrating...

I always consider it part of the gift, whether giving or getting. Honestly, I would think it was weird if someone gave me back the jar. And they aren't really that expensive unless you get fancy ones.

Because it reminds people that they actually only like those things because they are "cool" so then they have to find the next cool thing. The best way to avoid this is not to fall for the trends in the first place. Then you don't have to start or stop liking things based on how popular they are.

I have lived in kitchens with colored tiles most of my life (my parents' house and then several apartments/cottages) and find that they don't need to be matched. My kitchen decorating style has definitely been influenced by those vintage kitchens, but I just make sure my dishtowels are in a color that doesn't clash and then choose vases and other decorative items that are neutral or that seem to flow with the tile in some way. Whatever you do, don't try to pain the tile! I bet you'll end up loving it.

I guess it has never occurred to me to try to keep my house looking perfect while my kids are playing, but it has also never occurred not to tidy it up (with their help) at the end of the day. As long as there is a designated place for everything, it isn't too painful. And, though my kids definitely do play in the living room and kitchen, I just don't let those messes pile up. My own desk and bedroom are actually more likely to be a mess!

This house isn't decorated in my taste, and I wouldn't want a house that big myself, but it looks great and the whole family looks happy and comfortable. The kids' rooms are amazing! And I am so glad to see some variety on AT rather than yet another staged mid-century modern house in LA. Thanks.

Until age 2, I went with the recommendation of no TV, with occasional exposure at restaurants, during social events like the superbowl, etc. Now my son is two and watches a few you tube videos a week of things like animals, musicians, etc. We don't have cable or TV reception, but I have let him watch an hour or so of children's shows on netfilx a few times when he was sick and I had work I absolutely had to do. Tellingly, he always starts begging for it for the next few days. I know that it annoys people when they think non-TV-watchers are preaching, but if you don't start the habit of using TV the idea that it is necessary just seems silly. I absolutely think that a few carefully chosen shows or movies or games do no harm, but I don't like the idea of using it for babysitting.

Eat sprouts at your own risk. My mom is a food safety consultant and the only things she won't touch are alfalfa sprouts and oysters. And home-grown or organic makes no difference.

You don't want to keep chicken sitting warm for very long. Either cook ahead of time, refrigerate and then reheat, or serve it while it's still hot. Otherwise you are asking for trouble, food poisoning-wise.
