Until age 2, I went with the recommendation of no TV, with occasional exposure at restaurants, during social events like the superbowl, etc. Now my son is two and watches a few you tube videos a week of things like animals, musicians, etc. We don't have cable or TV reception, but I have let him watch an hour or so of children's shows on netfilx a few times when he was sick and I had work I absolutely had to do. Tellingly, he always starts begging for it for the next few days. I know that it annoys people when they think non-TV-watchers are preaching, but if you don't start the habit of using TV the idea that it is necessary just seems silly. I absolutely think that a few carefully chosen shows or movies or games do no harm, but I don't like the idea of using it for babysitting. TV Time: What's the Magic Number? |

Eat sprouts at your own risk. My mom is a food safety consultant and the only things she won't touch are alfalfa sprouts and oysters. And home-grown or organic makes no difference. The Danger of Raw Sprouts and James Beard Award Finalists Food News |

You don't want to keep chicken sitting warm for very long. Either cook ahead of time, refrigerate and then reheat, or serve it while it's still hot. Otherwise you are asking for trouble, food poisoning-wise. How Do I Keep Roast Chicken Warm Before a Dinner Party? Good Questions |

It seems fair to adjust the contribution to housework based on the numbers of hours of other work each person has (so that the total number of work hours is similar), but not based on income! What if one person works 50 hour weeks at a non-profit and the other works part time but makes a huge hourly wage? My observations of other couples and of my own relationship makes me believe really strongly that all income should be considered shared family money. Our worth should not be determined by our earning power, especially in family relationships! Home Ec.: What is Your Housework Worth? |

I think one important thing to consider (and the moral of many of the stories here) is that you shouldn't just put your stuff in a storage unit and leave it there without checking on it regularly. Just as I check the stored stuff in my garage every month or so to make sure there are no leaks, mildew, pests, you should check in on stuff in a storage unit. That said, the storage units I've used have been way better than garages or basements in terms of climate control and pests. Things You Should Know Before Renting a Public Storage Space |

Ha ha, I said about 5 years ago while watching an episode of "house hunters" that granite countertops and stainless steel appliances were going to be like avocado green refrigerators in a few years. Maybe that day has come? I've always disliked them, but I've also never had a rental with a counter that nice. I've either had formica (ugly) or tile (cute, but usually gross from years of tenants.) That's life as a renter. The Renter's Dilemma: Ugly, Ubiquitous Granite Countertops |

It wouldn't really be that hard for a giant company like Amazon to calculate state taxes for different states. And as more and more purchasing goes online, the states are suffering for the lost taxes. Currently, conservatives are more likely to support sales taxes than income taxes, so if we want any services from our states (like education, roads, social services, police and fire departments, parks, etc) we'd better at least collect those. California is currently in the process of closing many of its state parks, and the schools and other institutions are really suffering. Sorry for the rant, but come on, people, we have to pay for these things! The Amazon.com Sales Tax Man Cometh! |

So much white, so many different fonts. I'm sure I'll get used to the new navigation fairly quickly, but it is just so ugly. Welcome to the New Apartment Therapy! |

Filters like this don't help with hard water. I tried one for a year and it made no difference for my hair, unfortunately. Water softeners can help but are expensive and the salts they add to the water are bad for the environment. Like a Brita for Your Bath: The Rise of the Shower Filter |

I've never understood why it is so bad to talk about kids. It's no different than talking about what's happening at work or at home. I guess maybe I don't know what it would be like to have a hard time thinking of things to talk about with my husband, though. God help us if we needed prompts. Date Night Conversation Starters |

My great-great aunt and uncle had a narrow strip of cloth tape (not sticky) in one doorway. Three generations were measured there. All the boys wanted to reach my great-uncle's height (6'2") but none ever did. When they finally moved out of their house to live with my family, we just rolled up the tape and brought it with them. I'm planning on starting a new tape in my house. Portable, Renter-Friendly DIY Growth Chart Dollar Store Mom |

I was a little girl who collected spiders and insects. And I grew up to be an entomologist. I'll always remember my parents and uncles encouraging my interest and I hope I'll never discourage my kids from following their passions. And, please can we stop the attitude that bugs and spiders are icky?! Hopefully My Child Doesn't Want To Collect… |

These piss me off. Just use cloth napkins! They are no more expensive and can be used forever. My mom is still using the cloth napkins we used when I was a kid! Look! Perforated Roll of Cotton Placemats+Napkins |

Both! I always get rid of a ton of stuff before the move, and then find more things that don't fit or that I don't really need once I get to the new place. I've gone from a 2 bedroom to a studio and back again in the last 5 years, so the decluttering has depended on the size of the new place, too. Do You Declutter & Discard Before or After Moving? |

I did this and it totally sucked. My neighbors and landlord were jerks, I was depressed about the garbage in the yard, and we ended up having to call the city inspector to deal with some of the problems in the building. It was a gorgeous apartment, until the landlord decided to redo the windows while we were out of town (out of spite), ruined our paint job, and left plaster dust all over our furniture. Don't do it!
