My favorite memory in the kitchen has to be the hustle and bustle around Thanksgiving dinner at my parent's house. And mom always "let" me make the pie, which pleased both of us.

I have found that giving the magazines to a friend who would appreciate them is a good way to go. I really love it when someone give me their old magazines. I think this makes it easier to let go of them.

I would like to learn more about how to use herbs, including the more obscure ones like salad burnet, lovage, or this year's herb of the year: elderberry! Recipes and links to websites with information about herbs (uses/medicinal value/growing how-to/history) would be greatly appreciated!

Bravo on jumping in there and gardening even if you are not that confident! It's one of those life skills where getting your hands dirty is the only way to learn. I hope your herbs flourish!

What is the egg-shaped device in the last photo? Also, is that a toaster to the right of it? Very cool and interesting.

If I cook anything with a tomato base in my cast-iron skillet it seems to remove some of the seasoning, so I've stopped doing that. But I'll just use butter/oil the next time around and it seems fine though I'm sure that's not the proper way to season it (I don't really care!)

This is stunning. I would love to know how to do the cement squares with grass growing between, I've always loved that look. I'm with some of the other readers though, the dog probably liked it the way it was before! :)

My favorite adult birthday was one I threw for myself in my 20's. I made the cake and set the menu and invited the guests and ordered the pinata. I should do that again come to think of it.

A really great resource for scientifically sound nutrition information is the Nutrition Action Healthletter. ( http://www.cspinet.org/nah/index.htm ) As a dietitian, I encourage people to exercise their most valuable weapon- common sense- when reading studies that are diet and health-related.

@dandylyon, thanks for that link to the excellent article about quinoa farmers written by someone who lives among them and speaks to them on a daily basis.

Your cat is so fluffy and cute! Very interesting article, and a topic my friends and I have occasionally discussed. Maybe we should buy our winter clothes a size larger...

I had to choose one person I would go back to my childhood and say my mom. I will be blunt and tell you that she is not a great cook. But she made me feel that I belonged in the kitchen and she let me cook whatever and whenever I wanted. Being confident in the kitchen has given me a better life, and it's inspiring me to instill the same confidence in those of the next generation.
Also, the reason I keep coming back to thekitchn is that it is so full of inspiration and knowledge!
