love the apartment! i agree with some of the commenters that the price is a little on the high side. sunshiine537, i think prices in JH are between 280-300 ,from what i can gather from own my apartment search. perhaps they are testing the market....

Perhaps you could frame it out with sheetrock and add a marble fireplace surround. Or plaster over the stones and paint over it.

if worried about your foundations, maybe you could investigate connecting your downpipes to a rain water tank. There are systems that let you use water for gardening etc later on, or even discharge rain water to storm drains at a controlled rate over a period of time.

Lofts and such usually use a small metal reveal in lieu of baseboards. they are plastered to sit flush with the wall and wood floor slides under with caulk etc to allow for expansion. Really nice but but much harder/costlier to install. I agree with just putting a small straight baseboard and paint it the same color.

Hi Tamar,

Is it a sheet material or tile? If it is tile, those that were made with usually came in 9x9 dimension, instead of 12x12. Not a foolproof indicator though. If you dont want to remove the vinyl, I would suggest laying down a plywood subfloor over the vinyl that can be fixed to the joist below, before attempting a new finish.

We're big fans of Baby's First Year Calendar published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We got it as a gift. It has very few prompts so you can really get creative with entries.

Fiona,

Thank you for the welcome and the suggestions...
I am very excited (and terrified at the same time) but am looking forward to getting to know the area more.

Dear ATers,

I did a scary thing and bought a one bed apartment in Jackson Heights. It needs some kitchen, bath and other cosmetic renovations. Can anyone recommend a contractor they like (licensed and insured) that has worked on their projects in the area? Thank you very much.

Dear Eliza,

Would a door stop help? Maybe one that can be screwed on the floor. Look under Ives Hardware to see if any of their stuff will help.

My first thought when I saw your plan was to switch the master and living room, then remove the hallway walls between kitchn and big room so you can have an living/dining/kitchen area.

Lovely colors!
