All the worm comments are a bit hilarious...I was baffled about what everyone was talking about and had to go back to look at the photo to get it. I suppose if I were to criticize the photo, it would have more to do with what I consider to be the onions' undercooked state than any worm-like resemblance. Caramelized, as far as onions go, means brown, dark brown, and shapeless...certainly nothing that you would mistake for a pile of worms. Why Recipe Writers Lie About Caramelizing Onions Slate |

Egg whites also work very well. I learned this from a kind Sri Lankan lady, who gave me two bowls of egg whites, one to soak each hand, after I burned them on chili peppers. The pain, which was quite intense, began to lessen immediately, and other than a little tingling, was completely gone within a fairly short time. When my daughter was five, she got jalapeños on her face. Since soaking her face was not exactly practical, I used a brush and painted her face with the egg whites. Again, the relief began immediately. I was very glad that day that I had had my own experience and knew what to do! Hot Pepper Hands: An Easy Way to Stop the Burn |

I've had a lovely cream of lamb's quarters soup. I don't have a recipe, but I'm sure that any cream of spinach soup recipe could be easily converted. What Can I Cook with Lamb's Quarters? Good Questions |

I travelled from Turin to Paris with 3 friends (and 2 strangers) in a couchette car. We had a lovely time. I had one of the top bunks. In the morning, we all just stayed in bed, eating fresh bread and Nutella for breakfast. Sleeper Car Chic |

I've eaten from cracked and chipped dishes so many times over the years, that I find it hard to give much credence to the notion that it can be that dangerous, in the home, at least. On the other hand, I'd already come to the conclusion that I don't like looking at chipped dishes or handling their sharp edges, so I've eliminated all but a few most-favored dishes that have very small chips and invested in some Corelle. Now I can still buy ceramic dishes when I see something I like, knowing that I always count on the Corelle when I need it. Chipped Dishes: Do or Don't? |

I finally gave up the fussiness of peeling a kiwi and the subsequent sticky fingers. Now I cut the kiwi in half lengthwise, then carefully cut each half again lengthwise without cutting through the peel (well, mostly not). Then I just eat the fruit out of the peel. When I pack a lunch, I pre-cut the kiwi and pop it into a small Mason jar (of course!). Kiwi Push Pops! The Most Fun Way to Eat a Kiwi |

If you have a door with both glass and screen sections, mount the screen in the top half. Kitty can still lie by the door and look out, but the screen is conveniently (for those people who don't like having ripped screens) out of reach of the little darling. A Cat-Proof Screen Door Update! |

Wear two plastic bags like mittens—one for each hand. Pull the plant out of the ground, very slowly and carefully, grasping it at the base (when the ground is wet from rain or watering is best). Use hand #2 to pull the top edge of the bag down all the way and enclose the poison ivy. Then, using hand #1, pull the top of the second bag all the way down to cover the first bag. Drop into trash can. Suit up with two more bags for the next plant. Rinse your hands in cold water afterwards. Always remember to clean your face, too, in case you touched it without realizing it! I love stinging nettle tea. One of my favorite treats in February, when I'm starting to tire of winter, is to drink a cup of nettle tea and eat some warm, stewed rhubarb (that I made the spring before). It gives me the inspiration to make it through those last couple of months. Stinging Nettles: 8 Recipes for Spring Cooking |

I completely agree about the effect of lighting placed at face level. We keep a lamp on our dining room table, with a shade of pleated, cream-colored fabric. It creates a soft, warm atmosphere, and also ties in with other elements in the room. I much prefer it to the chandelier, unless I'm doing some work that requires bright light. My grandparents' house has never had traditional closets built into any of the bedrooms (the old part of the house was built around 1800, and the new part built around 1860). The solution a great-grandparent came up with was to fit in a "closet" on one side of the fireplace in each room. Shelving and a rod were built into the space created between the fireplace and the wall, and then beautiful full-length floral curtains were hung up over this. When I was a kid, it was just a part of how things were, and I didn't think about it much. Now I'm appreciative and find it to be a very good, instinctively feng shui, solution. The now-vintage curtains have a softening effect on the rooms and allow for a free flow of energy that cannot be achieved with a built-in closet set behind doors. I started my daughter with damp dishcloths when she was a baby (also very useful for teething), and once she needed less wiping down following a meal, she graduated to cloth napkins. We also follow a more French schedule for laundering, although we do keep some napkins aside for "nice" when we have company. Survey: Do You Use Paper or Cloth Napkins at Dinner? |
