thanks for the advice everyone! sounds like there are two camps - the "buy it and wait" camp and the "DIY" camp. I live in NYC, don't have a car or a lot of time so the thrift store/craigslist shopping probably won't happen. I do like lepidoptery's idea to get the ikea edland and spray paint it.
