My little guy loves his mat. We have one with farm animals from Skip Hop. The same company makes mats with other themes and none of them are plasticy. $60 and well worth it when he'll happily bat at the toys for 20 minutes at a time!

Another way that you can help to secure a frame to the wall in earthquake country is to use a product like Quake Hold under all four corners, after using a hook or nail (as mentioned above). Quake Hold is museum putty. Warm a small (like a tiny pea) amount in your hand and roll into a ball. Stick those balls under the corners of the frame, then push securely against the wall. The only time I've had that fail is on a frame next to a door that slams shut multiple times a day - and it took over a year and a half of the door slamming for the photo to finally jump off the wall!

I used to love eating frozen peas (and now sometimes pick up a small handful while I'm cooking with them)!

Plus, peas were great way to learn how to swallow pills when I was a kid. Screw it up? No problem. Chew away.

I (almost) always knit an umbilical cord hat (from the book Stitch N Bitch) or other infant hat. I've become known for them, and my new mom friends like to email me a picture with their little one it them!

As a teacher, gift cards are generally appreciated. I'm a middle school teacher and I frequently receive Starbucks cards (there's a Starbucks about a block away that the kids frequent). In terms of an amount, no amount is too small. Truly, it's the thought that counts. Personally, anything above $25 starts to feel a little like bribery.

If gift cards aren't in your budget, thank you notes are wonderful, and sometimes even better than gift cards. I know that I keep a file of them in my filing cabinet to puruse on no-good-very-bad days.

I won't have a crib to hang art over for a few more months, but my husband and I live in LA and have had three frames over the head of our bed for about 3 years now. We hang the tops like we always do, then use Quake Hold (museum putty) on the bottom two corners. They don't budge. We use this same technique in places where frames might be bumped or the slamming of a door might knock them down. No problems!

I was shopping laminate for my living room/dining room/kitchen. I found Pergo very "plasticy" to the touch. Lots of fake texture and the like. The Ikea brand had a much better feel to it. Ultimately though, I chose neither and went with Wilsonart. We've only had it for about a month, but I still love it.
