Hands down best tips article, and best comments, I've ever seen. My kids are definitely getting this one. I'll add this:

Nothing Improves in Storage.
It yellows, wrinkles, gets filthy, breaks, gets lost, becomes dated, mysteriously loses parts, and steals space.

Yes, there is a remote chance you'll need it some day, but it's almost certain someone else needs it right now. Give it away or sell it now.

Can two sofas (one of them 2/3 the length of the other) set at right angles share a side table between them? If so, how much space should there be (if any) between the pieces? They each face a side of a very large coffee table, on which most people put feet, not drinks.

An unfortunate lack of a kitchen exhaust fan in my house has led to the best feature in my backyard: a little table and electric outlet so I can bring my electric skillet out and cook all sorts of spicy, pungent, or greasy-steam emitting foods and not smell dinner in the house for days. And cooking outside is such a pleasure.

I like some of these, and aspects of the ones that don't strike me still give me ideas. Thanks!

Not a complaint, not asking you to do anything different.
Just commenting to let you know there are still a few people on the planet who don't use Facebook or Twitter (and who are already on your mailing list).

1. Light fixtures -- tops of bulbs, shades that aren't completely vertical, you get the idea.
2. The silverware drawer. ZOMG the crud that builds up in there. . . .
3. The edges of wall-to-wall carpeting. Unbelievably yucky once you start looking at them.
And a final thought -- maybe it really isn't worth the time to add spots like these to one's usual cleaning routine, especially if you feel like you're skimping if you don't include them. "Clean" is relative. :-)

Absolutely charming, and thoughtfully designed. I love it all.
My budget would not allow even a $100 renovation -- but rich, poor, thrifty, etc., are all relative. People with more money than me are rich. People with less money are poor. If my income changes, so will my definitions of rich and poor, spendy and thrifty. I suspect I'm not alone.
Many many thanks for sharing your kitchen, its history, and its renovation. It is inspiring.
