I love the practicality of all these comments--all about how you'd clean it, etc. I just think this tub is ridiculously sexy... all thoughts of cleaning were driven from my mind by pleasanter imaginings. Clearly, I am the sucker they designed this for!

This is not a general comment on religious symbols and their meanings, but is instead about the specific decor he wanted to use: Angels. I think angels are a very broadly-used symbolic representation that is picked up in tv, comics, movies, commercials in ways that have almost no religious connection whatsoever and are often not meant to be taken seriously. It would be different if he wanted to plaster the house with detailed renditions of the baby Jesus, whom one rarely sees depicted outside of a religious context. I agree, it might feel odd to sit around looking at baby Jesus images when you aren't Christian. But angels seem much more "generic" to me.

I think it is totally fine to enjoy the cultural iconography of Christmas no matter what your personal beliefs are. People shouldn't feel they aren't "allowed" to indulge in the use of these motifs unless they "really" believe in them--Santa is based on St. Nicholas, and you probably don't get upset about using images of Santa even if you don't believe in the idea of sainthood, right? To take it even further, when was the last time someone refrained from celebrating Halloween because they didn't "really" believe that dressing as a monster would scare of evil spirits and ensure a plentiful harvest?

I say if you like these images, use them. If you don't, don't.

(If your point is actually that you don't enjoy the images of angels all around you because it is incompatible with your beliefs, then that's totally fine. But I suggest that in that case, using angels would not be "hypocritical," it would simply be against your taste and preference.)

I absolutely love this post and all the ideas shared in the comments. I am going to add another suggestion--this is a handmade paper version from Etsy. It's sophisticated and would probably appeal more to older kids and adults, but it is really beautiful and the cleverness of how the folding flaps create the numbers themselves is just amazing!

This is not a "local" suggestion, but have you tried Etsy? Today is probably the last day to order and have anything by Dec. 1, but there are some really neat versions there.
