I always have the TV on as background noise and my place is actually not a loud building. I do it more because I live alone and when I first started living alone I wasn't use to it. Now I'm just use to having that background noise.

First of all who cares what people think. If sharing works for your budget and privacy needs go for it! (Personally I could never do it after college, but that's just me.)

Second, without knowing the size of the bedroom, or your place in general, I used my bedroom (11'2''x16' with a window and a double closet) as a test dummy. You can easily fit two double beds in there (not much else other than nighstands). Why double instead of twins?! As an adult (and not a large one at that) I find it hard to sleep on a twin bed. However, I have been eying these Ikea Brimne Daybeds that are twin size, but convert into a double for guests http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40228708/. Best of both worlds right there.

I also like the idea of turning a dining room or other unused space into one of your 'bedrooms', but personally I like the idea of having a door that closes more so than worry about sharing a room. It is something to consider though.

Have you thought about turning the living room into the large bedroom for both of you to share, and your bedroom into the living room (tv and couch). That way the larger space new bedroom (aka living room) can fit two larger beds. If you are worried about people seeing your bedroom, then go with the daybed idea, because they look like couches. Plus you would have more room to divide up with dividers, if need be. Again without knowing your space, I tried doing this in my living room (12'X21'6'' with 3 closets) and it worked well. (Hmmm maybe you should just move into my building!) The new living room (aka bedroom) could be where you hosted overnight guests (key here is that there is a door that closes).

As for the 'overnight guest' situation, definitely create a system either way.

Neither.

Say no to sectionals. Not just because I hate sections, but in your case it looks like a sectional overwhelms your space. Scale your furniture down. Go with a smaller couch and a chair or two for the living room in layout 1, and a smaller dinning room table (maybe a round one). Let your space breathe more.

Another overreaction. My only concern would be if it was an outdoor wedding just because it could be hotter than room temperature. If the wedding is indoors, don't worry about it. If you're really still worried about it, buy or make a test cake with cream cheese frosting, leave it out for a day and then eat it.

First off I appreciate parents who don't assume you bring your child (of any age). Ask about if you're kids are invited (give their ages if they are unknown). Not wanting to find or cannot afford a babysitter is not a reason to break whatever the host has decided. Personally if someone disregarded my wishes as a host they would not be invited back. 'Lumps' are all the same as regular kids to me.

I hate having parties but when I do, they are no child parties unless otherwise stated. If I had a party that kids were welcome to attend I would make sure they had a craft or something to do in another room where parents can hear and see them, but separate from the adults. I love truneic's time rule, but I would amend it to say it the party starts or goes past 7pm, no children should be allowed unless otherwise stated.

That graphic doesn't really help me since I need most people to sit to my left due to a hearing problem. Plus group over 4 people I knew there is no way I can hear, and therefore, interact with everyone at the table.

Well I'm insulted that my opinion came off as insulting to Sarah. Unless Sarah says she was insulted, don't put words in her mouth. It's hard to read tone on the internet, so all I will say is that was not my intent other than to get her to reconsider her idea.

loquaciouslaura I understand if she's excited about her boring (to me) sectional and hardwood floors, but I thought I would offer a different solution. If she really wants a rug and/or she doesn't want to consider my alternative, by all means go for it Sarah! But I am free to share alternative ideas, and there's no need to point out that it isn't suggesting a rug. Sarah can make that call, so your comment is really unnecessary.

Repeat after me: Say no to sectionals! Say no to hardwood floors! Resist the urge.

You might ask, hey minilauren, why the hate. Here's what I don't like about sectionals and hardwood floors.

1. Sectionals are too boxy. It says hey I gave up trying to find complementary chairs, sofas and couches. I'll just cheat and use an unappealing box that I don't need to match to any other seating option.

2. Hardwood floors are awful. I had them at my parents house and my room was always cold. They are aesthetically cold too. Personally I don't get people spending all this money on nice hardwood floors to cover them with rugs. Get new carpet, maybe a short shag with mixed hues of one color. (My mom's carpet is tan with caramel. It is lovely!).

So in short redo your whole design plan. Ditch your ugly sectional. (I know you don't have a picture of it here, but if it's a sectional it's ugly to me because it's a big box of nothing). Ditch your hardwood floor plans. Your room will thank you!

I just keep my bread in the fridge. It takes a long while for it to get moldy that way.

Easy. Cut down on the number of "real gifts" you buy. I only buy for my immediate family. Everyone else gets bourbon balls or other tasty homemade treats. My BF even prefers bourbon balls to an actual gift. (YES they are that good!) This means I spend abou $100-150 total on Xmas. Go me!

I have owned a Wysteria (heathery lavendar) sofa (http://images.crateandbarrel.com/is/image/Crate/AzureSofaWysteriaS11?$lg$) for almost a year now.

I LOVE it and still do. You can make any color a neutral if you want. Plus if I got tired of it you could tone it down by draping a blanket over the back and adding pillows.

I am so happy I bought this sofa for the design, not specifically for the color. I had been in love with it for years. Originally I was going to get it in a light blue, but when they discontinued it I happened to snag the floor model in Wysteria for about $700 less than the original price!

How To Use 5-Foot-Wide Room for Guests? Good Questions

1) Don't buy a pull out couch - EVER. Have you ever slept on one that didn't suck? Plus they are too heavy to move and come in just generic style options. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

2) If you parents are younger and/or in good health, get an air matress or day bed. Who cares if it takes up the whole room. It's a guess room, so presumably it doesn't need to be used all the time.

3) If your parents are older and/or not in good health, let them have your room. I would still recommend an air matress or day bed. A futon might work too.

For decor if you do a bed that takes up all of the room, you could do Morocco themed room. That would make it exciting and hide the "cozy" aka small factor well.

I also hate the following items:
sectionals
too many pillows
the room being too trendy in general (rather than being yourself)
perfect rooms that never look used
anything too matchy-matchy
chunky furniture

Hardwood floors everywhere! I hate them except for in the kitchen and/or dinning room. Everytime I see a hardwood living room I want to scream no!! Everywhere else they come off as too cold (literally and aesthetically). Plus then you have to buy all these rugs to cover up your floors. What?! My room was hardwood when I was a kid and it sucked. Don't ruin your house with floors you're going to cover with a bunch of rugs. If you like rugs, use them over your carpet.

A toaster oven will save you. Slow cooker is a good idea too. I lived in a small basement of someone's house for 2 years without a real oven and I survived. It worked out pretty well as long as I didn't need to cook for more than 1 to 2 people.

When I got a new mattress we put the old one out on the curb and it was gone within 3 hours. Want to know why? Those who can't afford a mattress are not picky about taking one off the street in a nice neighborhood. Yes I wouldn't do it, but I understand why some poor people would.

Cute. Too bad it's a UK company though. It seems like a waste of CO2 to have it shipped to the US.
