Who's = "Who is"; whose = personal possessive. Honestly, where did the editing go?

Decluttering Tips: Shedding Clothes from Your Closet

We would like this to be a design problem, but it's a problem of discipline. Cats can be trained, if given the proper scratching alternatives and consistency. My family has had innumerable cats over three generations, and have yet to experience destruction by claw. They also do not jump up on tables, counters, or other inappropriate surfaces.

That same discipline would be beneficial for the editor of this story, who appears to have missed a number of spelling, word choice, and grammatical errors. Tsk tsk.

@Jillbetty hits the nail on the head. Innovative ideas are wonderful; eye-rolling moralizing is just tiresome. Watching tv is not antithetical to having a life, and doesn't make anyone a good or bad person.

This piece might resonate with more people if it were written from a questioning perspective: What do you use? Which pieces earn their keep, and which have we simply stopped seeing? At issue are the presumptuous directives: "Just mount your tv to the wall! Take up all of that excess closet space with hanging shelves!" -- as if none of us would have stumbled upon that ground-breaking notion otherwise (or have tons of wasted closets, just languishing for a higher purpose).

AT is fascinating for the opportunity to explore the designs, solutions, and bright ideas of other, real people-- whether they share our taste or not. More sharing + less condescension = more fun and inspiration for all.

"Pet peeve" columns foster a negative mindset and the kind of judgmental, bickering, unhelpful interactions that have caused many readers to move on, or limit participation Please find a way to address items in a way that fosters productive, creative, helpful dialog.

I appreciate the talent and experience of so many AT readers, but value diplomacy and respectful, productive give-and-take most of all.

Any ideas about where to find that skinny console table (or something similar) in the first shot? It looks like Room & Board's Slim collection, but it's not. Love/need/must have it.

My former paramour claimed that design *is* my porn...

But seriously folks, this is where I come to escape from the "sticky questions of life". There is space on the interwebs to seek expert advice on the problems (and joys) of the other components of my life.

I would also like to echo the comments of Thorndale and others: The quality of the writing and editing has declined, which is disappointing, as the audience here is generally well-read and erudite.

Maxwell (and AT staff), be who you are, with excellence. Don't be a mile wide and an inch deep; if you want to expand, dive deeper into design. I'd love some pieces on principles and skills that are taught in design school.

We love you just the way you are.

It seems like a lot of the responses are from foodies. Not everyone enjoys cooking.

I counteract that (as well as, for unrelated reasons, running out of steam long before dinnertime) by having a larger lunch and lighter dinner. It takes the pressure off, I'm still getting what I need, and not ending the day on a super-full stomach.

Pi, Joydreamz, Krikkit - thank you. It's too bad that so many read this piece with a mindset of poverty or a judgmental heart, rather than as a meditation on how being an adult means caring for and providing comfort to others.

Even when my family could barely keep the lights on, we always had a clean, gracious home that was capable of welcoming and ensuring the comfort of the most esteemed guest - and all were.

It's never about money; it's always about generosity.

Kristin, your space is just lovely. It is elegant and cohesive, and allows for latitude with accessories (i.e. I couldn't have talked myself into brass lamps with chrome, but the neutral palette makes it work.) Congratulations!

Out Darn Scratch: Cleaning Marks Off Dinnerware

I respectfully disagree with the hate and discontent. White cabinets make the room lighter and give the impression of cleanliness, which the old wood does not. There is also an odor that old cabinets emit that is helped greatly when they are painted. And I also agree about the product being more cohesive with the existing appliances.

Not to mention, flipping is a very different game than it was five years ago. This is a good compromise for a flipped property- or as an intermediate step until a full reno is feasible.

I just wish people would disagree without being disagreeable.

As an editorial note, there is no "plexiglass"; Plexiglas is a trademarked name for acrylic glass. It is also marketed under Lucite or Perspex, for our friends across the pond.

Like many AT readers, I hold you all to a higher editorial standard. Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

To me, it's about value (or cost vs. overall utility). For example: Several years ago, I bought a 2-week-old Schillig modular sofa from Craigslist for $750 (original retail: $3000+). Recently, I discovered that Schillig now makes a corner piece that will turn my sofa into a sectional. I spent $1200 on that piece, but will now have the sofa I've always wanted, of a quality that will endure for years to come (and yes, we're certain the fabrics will match).

It's wasteful to spend even small amounts on something that doesn't meet the Charles Rennie Mackintosh (beauty/utility) rule.

Yes, ClintonAve-- the blue could be grayed down a bit, but my eye is distracted by the line of demarcation, which competes with the lovely moulding. It would work more smoothly in a room with less wonderful bones.

Kudos to Vanessa for being brave, expressing her creativity, and creating a space that is personal, pulled-together, and original. It doesn't look like a MCM showroom, a catalog, or even a condo! Well done.

Let's hope other folks are willing to ignore the snark, condescension, and rudeness so that we can all benefit from seeing more fantastic, creative, and even wacky, ideas. It *is* possible to disagree without being disagreeable.

Liz, your space is eclectic in the most elevated sense: An aesthetically pleasing blend of simpatico styles, which feels curated over time. As a fan of neutral, calm palettes for the home, your place seems sublime to me.

On a personal note, kudos for having few enough belongings that you have an overabundance of closet space! Well done on all counts!
