I think the plaids and ginghams above are kitschy and classy and current.

I don't know many who would agree (including my husband), so I'm not about to "go there" in my own house.

A decade or two ago we were seeing grand traditional florals with a bit of plaid or stripe thrown in, and I liked that just as much. But the same story....

Not many people are going to get it and, who knows, how long it will remain upscale and fresh?

It's a definite "can't do it" for my little family.

Recently painted teenage daughter's bedroom BM's "Chicago Blues." I would never paint a wall blue (personal choice); she, however, wanted blue-blue, as in "royal blue." Still working things out.... ;)

So depends upon context. For me, it's the 80's homage: peach, seafoam, etc. Spend a decent chunk of the 80's mad for it; spend at least an equal amount of time getting rid of it. (Count me in with the bandaid/chicken flesh hating group.) ;P

I love the lightness and airiness of the new look! And considering the sad state of the before--a big "wow" :)

It's nice. But it's old. Painting the backs of bookshelves has been a feature of design/decor magazines for ages. It is almost expected.

Why is this one special? I find it uninspiring and a very safe choice.

The sleek, dark "modern" wainscotting breaks up the high room (in a high house) horizontally and must visually enlarge the space.

Fresh take on the usually traditional wood:)

I went to pastry school. It's silly to think you won't get food on your hands when you cook.

I use hands for separating eggs, tapping each egg on the counter. If you toss the yolk from shell to shell, you stand a good chance of piercing the yolk with the broken shell and ruining your egg.

When I'm really taking my time, I scrape out the whites with a finger.

I have used dry powdered egg whites from my home pantry and found them to work just fine--even for angel food cake.

Your bf will be overjoyed to hear that his bed has all the wood you need. (Couldn't help myself....)

How To Style A Grandiose Bed?
Good Question

I totally agree that the place to spend real money is on the bedding (you spend more hours close up and in it than anyplace else in the room--what you don't see really close up, you can save on if you want.)

The Gaiam catalog has beautiful single-colored embroidered sets of bedding. Creamy and light colors; naturals.

Matalisse bedding is another option.

If you really want to go custom, see if you can have simple curtains made from extra bed sheets.

If you prefer cost-cutting while splurging on the bedding, I would go for less expensive and sheerer curtains--and yes, I like the golden colored ones with the subtle vine pattern. They have a bit of shine, which is not a bad thing in a room so heavy.

Here's a project: That little space above the bed would be the perfect place for a small window, perhaps one with lights or decorative.

Another idea: candle wall sconces across the back wall (4 of them; you can forget the more casual rule of threes with that bed).

I hate the idea of adding any more WOOD to that room. I would never use woven blinds or add a rough-hewn wooden wall. I think that bed has all the wood you need ;)

Actually, the green on the walls could also work as an accent color.

Keep the bed--Tranquility Now:)

I use Benjamin Moore paints and that's where I picked up these colors: Harbor Highlands Tan on the walls; Pearl Harbor ceiling; Rustic brick trim.

The curtains can show opulence without being heavy. Overstock has on sale today Blueit 108-inch Faux Silk Embroidered Organza Sheer Panel: tone-on-tone rich golden sheers with an embroidered, simple vine pattern. I'd hang these from the ceiling and use valances that blend with them.

I'd do warm cream bedding all over that showpiece bed.

You go shabby chic and find iron brackets and paint them cream: make wall mounted shelves under each window and scrap the night stands.

Above these, hang your lamps from the ceiling above each bedside. Go traditional and either cream or tarnished, shabby metal on these.

Let us know what you do! My bed is too much for my room (until I saw yours....) I now have hope.

Actually, I think the opulence will work out and you'll show us:)
