On a move to Portland, OR years ago, friends helpfully loaded all my crap on to the largest size Uhaul truck. I pulled out of my driveway and the hood spontaneously unlatched and couldn't be locked down. I called Uhaul and they told me to bring the truck in. They couldn't fix it, so we had to unload everything and reload it into another truck. Which of course, since we loaded all the heavy stuff in first we had to take everything out and start over. After many hours delay, I drove the 2nd large truck by myself all the way to Portland. It wasn't until I was backing into my new place that my friends who were helping me unload on that end informed me that I had no working tail/brake/signal lights. Ugh Uhaul.

Often our bedrooms are the last to get those design touches that help us feel more comfortable and enjoy our space more.

Placing one of those vintage bus scrolls above your bed is a graphic way of filling a large space. Adding a mirror along the side wall above your dresser can help reflect light back into the space, depending on where your windows are.

I just met with the Director of an organization that renovates shelters/transitional homes in the Puget Sound area. Here's the link for any of you interested. www.girlsgivingback.org/index.php (Shout out to DahliaCactus in Seattle).

Hey all. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I appreciate your candid feedback. I am enthused about how many of you are doing similar projects and community work throughout the country.

The 'Gratitude' print is from a photo I took of a sculpture that inspired me and I hoped it might do the same in others, regardless of their situation. Nothing more.

The design aspects of the shelter project were accomplished completely through private donations from the individual designers, vendors and community members. The YWCA did not pay for any of the furnishings, fixtures or accessories. This renovation allowed the families to move from shared dorm spaces to individual apartments so they could have private space for themselves and their children. The individual room designs were intended to make the women and their families feel safe, valued and hopeful.
