It didn't happen to me but I never forget this story. My brother and his girlfriend were in college he was driving home on the worst expressway in NY - it is always congested with trucks as they are not allowed on Parkways - he was behind a truck that was hauling pipes, the truck in front of him came to a sudden stop and several long pipes came flying off the back straight through the windshield of my brother's car. Luckily my brother's girlfriend was quick and she pushed my brother's head down just as she ducked or he would have been decapitated. I always go around trucks, I don't even like them barreling down behind me.

I had my wood floors polyeurathaned 3 yrs ago with the same product used on the decks of boats (3 coats). Even though most care instructions for wood floors say not to wet mop I pour buckets of water weekly and have not had any problems with either buckling, warping or loss of the finish.

Whenever I see the commercials for this tub, I think how much less space it would take up in my tiny bathroom - not to mention that at 5'2" I almost always bang my toes tripping into and out of the tub (its the original 1950's high tub) but since I don't see myself living in the same place into old age I guess i'll keep taking my chances that I won't be found unconscious or dead in my bathroom.

I have the same problem, blazing sunlight at 6:00 a.m. I purchased the Ikea Bomull drapes in dark chocolate brown and hung them using Dignitet wire tension mounts, but I see that you would have to install the mounts on the ceiling which might be very difficult. I love Laura's idea on using the blind track.

Are you kidding me?!! She must only use her kitchenas an art gallery, if she cooked she'd know that she'd ruin the photos from the heat not to mention the splatter of food.

My shoes are everywhere!! In the foyer by the front door (I take my shoes off as soon as I come in to the apt), hanging on the back of my bedroom door in a 36 pair shoe organizer (though I've squeezed in 42 pair), in plastic shoe and boot containers in my bedroom closet - wall to wall and floor to ceiling (had to buy Ikea closets for the cloths), under my bed in more shoe storage contraptions (i'm always looking for shoe storage organizers - none of which i've been happy with) and spilling around my bed. I stopped counting at 250 pair - I am admittedly a 'shoe junkie' - often called 'Imelda Marcos' by friends and family! My dream is to have a second bedroom with floor to ceiling shoe storage on some short of mechanism that rotates them out (saw this in a Goldie Hawn movie 'Overboard' and have been obsessed with the idea for years). If Feng Shui is for real my obsession with shoes is probably very bad Feng Shui and the reason why i'm still single :)

Hasn't anyone ever heard of the word "eclectic"? I have wrought iron throughout my home together with wood pieces ranging from midcentury mod to country. In my kitchen I paired wrought iron chairs (painted a pale sage with a vintage finish) with a country cherry wood table. I think your chairs would look good with a brown/black or mahagony table and you can either paint them a bronze with gold undertone or keep them as is but I would definitely replace the seats with a nice rich fabric.

I have an antique mirror from the early 1900s that I no longer can hang up since my new place is constructed of fiberboard that would fit your fireplace. It looks similar to the gold one in the http://www.highfashionhome.com/mirrors.asp site posted by SingleInNewyork and it won't cost you $500. If your interested contact me at salg1113@aim.com

bellwethr has it right. I too had this problem in my apartment as the bathroom does not have a window and the shower area is way over in a corner. What i did was on a regular basis sprayed diluted clorox to the ceiling and then ran the spongemop on it until I repainted. I purchased paint specifically for bathrooms and kitchen (supposedly made especially to prevent mold and yellowing) and to be on the safe side had the additive for mold prevention (comes in a tube) mixed in. This seems to have done the trick - though its only been about 6 months since I painted the bathroom. If you don't have to worry about modesty - I would leave the door open to the bathroom a bit so that it doesn't get too steamy in there.

This website is supposed to be about 'advice' - constructive advice. The comments by Vagary and the tone used were totally inappropriate and downright nasty (hate to know you). If you have nothing constructive to say then don't comment.... ever heard the adage 'if you having nothing nice to say, then don't say anything' same goes for posting.

I apologize for 'venting' here but I have read many a comment in which 'personalities' are needless imposed.

I personally haven't lived thru a renovation but both my sisters have. It definitely works to your advantage in that you are there to oversee. My sisters were lucky in that they were there to catch some pretty serious mistakes before it was too late to remedy it. On the negative side you are a 'slave' to constantly cleaning up the dust and debris in order to live in the home and does but a hugh stress and strain on you and the family.

If you "absolutely love the retro look" of it WHY would you ruin it by painting/laminating/veneering or stick on anything on??!!! The whole point of owning something retro is that it is genuine to the era. It seems to be a very simple piece. If your dead set on having something that is painted/veneered/laminated sell this one to someone who will truly appreciate it as is and take the money and have a carpenter make a duplicate of the style and paint it to your hearts content. I would buy it in a minute!

When I was about 7 or 8 I remember getting for a Xmas a childs set of the Corelle Cornflower set with the matching 'bakeware".

When I moved out to my own apartment I bought the real thing including the coffee pot. I only have the coffee pot now and unfortunately in my many moves since then somehow lost the coffee basket that goes inside (i've looked on ebay to try and find a replacement with no luck), but I have the pot sitting on my kitchen counter. I love looking at it and remembering when I was a kid and my Saturday chore was to dust the beautiful midcentury furniture we had while I listened to music by Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, The Temptations and who can forget Marvin Gaye. I'm waxing nostalgic...

Though this looks like a really nice piece, whatever happened to furniture that comes fully assembled. At $500 plus tax and delivery - I don't want to spend an hour or more putting furniture together - thats all well and good when its inexpensive Ikea stuff but not when spending more than a couple hundred dollars.

Before you invest in a washer you should ask your landlord if you can have a washer - most don't allow it and if they find you out they will insist you get rid of it or terminate your lease.

The problem with your apt is that its so old - I had a washer in my previous rental and though I lived in a 1950s bldg on the 5th flr, when I used the washer it would back up into the 1st flr tenant's sink as the plumbing would not allow for 20-30 gallons of water to be quickly rushed down into the drain pipe (major reason why landlords don't allow them). I had to get rid of it.

I now purchased a co-op and I've researched other small counter height washers - the combo which also dries - most of the European ones use less water and the speed in which it is dumped out is slower so this might not happen with them but I still haven't actually purchased one since their prices are 2 to 3 times more expensive than standard washing machines. Check out Asko, LG, Haier and Bosch just to name a few on the web. Good luck.
