I have a different view of what "going wrong during a move" is so yes to me you are a touch whiny but I get it. You planned, God laughed.
NYC takes no prisoners and you are in the city that still never sleeps. So by all means learn to love that subway noise and find a local dry cleaner/laundromat. Go to Fairway Market, enjoy the parks, sit on the steps by Julliard, take advantage of free days at the museums, hug your dog and be tickled pink that you did not move here during the winter ;-)

Holy Moses, while I know this is for a project and doors were removed, it affirms yet again, why I hate opening shelving. LOL
It would be kind of cool though if Apartment Therapy did a version of this by asking readers to send in similar shots. ;)

I love the first one as it is unsettling, but also alluring and beautiful. The rest, not so much.
Art is something that will always be dissected and discussed. As for mainstream "artists", I dislike Damien Hirst and the revered designer Jonathan Adler, but clearly there are those who think they are the cat's meow and that is what makes art interesting and it really embodies "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Segacs, I seriously do wish we had your healthcare, but we don't here. As far as corrupt politicians, yeah we got those :) Who doesn't??

Housing is tough in the NYC area because NJ, parts of CT, NY state & Long Island are all considered the suburbs to Manhattan and the prices reflect that. You can live in a craphole and pay higher rent than someone pays for a mortgage over the border in PA, in certain areas of course because Bucks County is not cheap. Truly crazy.

And if the high taxes I pay as a home owner in NJ went to health care, cheap college and day care, I would be more than happy to pay it, alas, it is not so.

I cannot even fathom what the air quality is like, if it even exists, in these beyond fit for human living spaces. $1,300 a square foot?!?! Why does it seem like the shanty towns featured in "City of God" is getting played out in way more places than just Rio without a peep?? It is appalling and I feel for these families.
