My dad makes the best Chinese version of this dish!! It has the most perfect silky texture and super tasty savoriness. Sometimes he mixes in thousand year old eggs (which I love but recognize is not to everyone's taste) to be fancy but often, it's just some ginger slivers, scallion and soy sauce.

I wish I had some right now. Note to self, call dad for recipe

Hot soy milk (sweet or salty) is a very common breakfast for the Chinese but less so for Cantonese people.

You tiao is really good in the soy milk and is even better if they have a xiao bing (I've heard it referred to as a Chinese pancake but really more like a flatbread) wrapped around it. It's super delicious and very filling.

By the way, I've never heard of congee being made with day old rice. It's usually fresh. Day old rice is best for making fried rice.

@nomnom- When I read "My mom's cure for the cold was definitely forcing me to go to school as usual...", I knew you were Asian! Like you, nothing short of death would have caused my Chinese mom to keep me home from school. Our cure was jook usually with salted pork, thousand year old eggs and the occasional salted duck egg.

Kinder Eggs are awesome and it's true that you're not allowed to bring them into the US. The ones that are sold here have crappier toys (usually puzzle pieces).

"PS: Where are y'all shopping for lamps?? IKEA, dumpters, Brooklyn curb, and the Salvation Army are not acceptable responses to this question."

That was really rude and uncalled for. If you can afford $700 for a lamp then lucky you but you don't need to insult the people who can't/ won't spend that amount on a lamp.
