Oh wait. It's not sunny at night. Realistically, the solar panel will save you between 5 and 10 cents per day.

Yes, the AC will consume a lot more than 50 watts. Probably about 40 times more.

Assuming 12 cents per kilowatt hour, that little 70 watt solar panel will save you 0.070 * 0.12 = $0.0084 every hour.

If you run the AC for 24 hours, you'll save a whopping 20 cents.

Completely justifiable too! Carry your groceries from your living room to the kitchen. Then your car disappears!! Yes, I would like one.

On the other hand, I bet the average citizen in Sierra Leone, Niger, Eritrea, or even Somalia would think we have way too much money.

If they mount a kitchen sink into the desk, I could eat and work at the same time.

I just noticed I spelled misspelled (correct) as mispelled (incorrect). Heh.

Cool. Like the house in Minority Report (almost).

Hey CODEISLIFE, you mispelled the following words:

mis-spelled should be misspelled
actualy should be actually
definately should be definitely
uinexpensive should be inexpensive

quote:

"This is actualy a good glimpse into the near future. Google for mote sensors. Simple monitoring isn't the goal though. It's not much good to have a system to simply tell you the temp is dropping because of a door left open if the system can't also close the door...and send an alarm if this turns out not to be possible, etc. Or to over-ride the thermostat because why crank up the heat if a door is open. The floorplan display is cute but not necessary. We used SNMP and text messaging to monitor data center health at one job I had. Every server had sensors, so that out of a whole multistory building there would be an email and SNMP event telling us the exact location of a fault. That was only when human intervention was required. Over temp conditions resulted in higher fan speeds - etc, or shut fans and systems off in the event of fire since the last thing a rack fire needs is high speed fans (it did happen once). His system is nice but it doesn't take an entire wiring closet to implement. Nice to see the idea implemented in a home though. What he needs to next is come with some good AI or at least some good scripts to be executed based on error conditions since nothing like that was even hinted at in the video. Full home automation is most definately the future. If you want to see a simple uinexpensive system that's far more powerful than this though, go browse the Smart Home website, they sell a bunch of home automation hardware and software (speaking only as a customer). Most of what's shown in the video is a decade or more out of date. Nice work for one guy though - like he said, he used what he had lying around.

BTW, you mis-spelled "therefor" above. LOL"

The expression is "bated breath," which is a contraction of "abated breath."

Batteries ...for the Home? | Apartment Therapy Unplggd

I have extensive experience with touch screen remote controls for home theater use. For example, the Philips Pronto and Marantz units, URC, etc.

Most power usage is for the backlighted display. If you're channel surfing, you are going to want the display to remain on, so you can press a button every couple of seconds. Specialized remotes have large batteries with capacity for several days of use before recharging.

Custom graphics and macros typically fill up several megabytes of memory.

There are usually a few hard buttons, so commonly used commands can be pressed by touch. Eg. volume and channel up/ down, 4-way pad with OK button, etc.

There are other differences too, of course.

However, these units usually cost several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.

My Flos 265 is extremely versatile. It hinges at the shoulder, well as the elbow.

Mounted high on the wall, I can bring the lamp directly underneath the wall mount, or extend it seven feet from the wall (or anywhere in between).

It's expensive though.

I bought a Samuel Heath folding seat. The intended application is for a sauna, so it's made of iroku (African teak wood).

http://www.samuel-heath.com/shbrowser/Products.aspx?ParentId=P203

I had it installed in my tiny foyer for tying my shoelaces.

The contractor had to reinforce the wall by removing a large portion of the 3/4" drywall, then screwing a sheet of 3/4" plywood across three studs in place of the missing drywall. Then everything was mudded over, and the drywall refinished, sanded and painted. Then the seat was screwed into the reinforced wall.

Yes, it is expensive. The seat costs around $300, plus about $1000 of labour.

But the wood and silver anodized aluminum looks modern and blends in well with my modernist interior. It looks high-end.

Please delete the car door information. Don't perpetuate this urban myth!

Actually, it's pretty funny that someone is going to try it. Maybe leave it up, and let them learn their own lesson!

P.S. to my above comment:

I have castors which add 4" to the above table.

With 3/4" thick tabletop, the lowest table height is 28 1/4". The highest is 39 1/4".

I built my own table using hardware from Hafele:

Look at the last two pages in the above link.

I installed castors. My table rises from dining to almost bar height via a crank.
