you should be washing your fruit anyway, but to get rid of the mites just soak the fruit in a bowl of water with a few Tbs of white vinegar in it, then rise them in a colander

I live in a space not too different from this one, we have chrome shelving with plants on the wall by the narrow corner (also happens to get the best light) and the greenery also really brightens up the space.

To "hide" the odd shape of the room we have the IKEA EIVOR CIRKEL rug, parallel to the weird wall, with the corner tucked under the couch on the long wall. Any large rug with swirls, not geometric or classic patterns, should help mask the "offness" off the walls.

Otherwise, treat it like any other long and narrow living/dining space but with bonus livingroom area!

IKEA LANTLIVE plant stands are really affordable, low profile, plant casters that also allow you to rotate your plant so it doesn't outgrow it's corner or grow crooked from leaning towards the sun, then you can clean under where the plant normally lives too!

Wow, I sound like an ad, but my dad gave me one for our new apartment (to go with the potted tree he gave us) and I'm a huge fan!

When you're in the market for a new one, I've seen a lot of Le Creuset seconds at TJ Maxx/Marshall's/Home Goods for over 50% off the list price of a first quality piece, just be sure to find whatever make them seconds before you buy! I bought one without knowing that second quality meant that there was a tiny flaw in the enamel; uneven coloring, off-coloring, or a drip in the enamel don't effect the usability or life of the pot, a bare spot is not worth taking home.

I <3 my big "paprika" sofa with hidden bed from Arhaus. It's so warm and inviting! I was afraid when we moved from our old apartment (grey, dingy carpets and off-white walls) to our new place (cherry stained oak floors and beige walls) that it would be too warm toned, but it actually looks like a cool toned red in the new setting and I still love it!

Now I just need a new area rug for the living room because the old one was purchased for a smaller space and looks dinky now.

I recently found Tempaper, peel-and-stick wallpaper, has anyone tried it?

http://www.tempaperdesigns.com/home.nxg

Right on their home page they state "It is recommended that you apply Tempaper to surfaces that have been painted with an eggshell or satin finish. Applications on matte or flat paints are not recommended." In my (limited) experience, all the apartments I've lived in have had eggshell walls, they're just easier to keep clean and some landlords claim they look "brighter" because of the slight sheen.

my grandparents have an elevator in their house, it opens into the basement, livingroom, and their bedroom, and looks like a closet from the outside (a regular door opens to the elevator door). It's small, only big enough to squish 3 people in, or fit just my grandpa and his wheelchair more recently. My grandma likes it for carrying laundry and to bring things from the kitchen to/from the basement.

both Denver and Boulder, Colorado allow chickens (no roosters) and have huge young adult populations (including myself, in Boulder). I'm part of a CSA, chicken/honey bee/goat milk co-op, a covenant (private community) garden, and am active in local sustainable, Jewish food and environmental awareness (see Hazon, among others). There are lots of local opportunities to get your hands dirty in Colorado, or not, we've got some kick-ass farmers markets once the ground thaws ;-)

I agree with tethering the lens cap to the body and putting a UV filter on the lens.

Once I know I'm going to keep the camera, I put a small return address label somewhere on the body too, and a business card in the case. --Cutting the doofy picture off the the March of Dimes fundraiser labels make perfect tiny labels!

Down. Then both my husband and I have to lift and close at least one lid every time someone uses the toilet. Also, the idea of germs being spread around by flushing the potty with the lid open totally grosses me out; my toothbrush is only 4' away!

look in the bulk bins at your local grocery, or definitely at a grocery with a healthier aim (Sprouts, Sunflower, Harris Teeter, etc.). Remember, couscous is a pasta and should be treated as one so don't buy too much at a time and happy hunting!

make spiced apple compote! Your house will smell amazing: sliced apples, raisins, a cinnamon stick, splash of lemon juice, water to cover, and simmer on low and stir occasonally for as long as you want. If it cooks for too long, it will turn into apple sauce and then apple butter (jsut don't let it go dry or it will burn and not smell lovely any more).

Also, you can make wine out of them (google it), but it will taste a lot like Maneshevitz.

I'm not sure what we're doing this year, but I just put in an order with a frozen, kosher, organic meat company for two 2-3 lb. turkey thighs and a small package of turkey breast cutlets. I'm more into white meat and my husband is more into dark, but this way we can cook just for us (an maybe the 3-4 friends we can fit in our apt for dinner) without too many leftovers. Huzzah for turkey parts!

herb salt! It looks really cute in the 4oz canning jars from the grocery/box store. $8/12 jars + dry herbs and sea salt. Yum! Here's my mom's recipe for one jar worth. I use the blender just to get big batches evenly blended in a few pulses.

Compound butters are also good, but don't travel as well.

I made my own frozen stock concentrate: roast veggies, add just a bit of water, a lot of salt and pepper, and puree. Freeze in ice cube trays and then dump in a tupperware or ziplock bag. It's kinda like sofrito, only with my own flavors (2 onions, a head of garlic, a leek, 5 carrots, a yellow beet, a celery root [doesn't burn like celery would], and a turnip).

Also, most Thai food can easily be made vegan and is almost always gluten and dairy free.
