An original oil painting of Tom Selleck as Magnum PI, done by the previous owner. We spied it hanging haphazardly in the garage during our initial walk though and asked that it be included in the sale. The owner, an 85-year-old woman whose other art was making porcelain crosses with profiles of Jesus painted on them, balked and nearly canceled the sale, claiming Magnum was worth $500. We didn't fight her. But I found out when the estate sale was planned and was first to arrive. Magnum was hanging on the dining room wall, priced at $75. I grabbed him and paid full price, and the sale organizer threw in a paper and ink study the woman had done before committing the mustachioed crime-fighter to canvas. Magnum hung proudly alongside the fireplace for several years until he was displaced by a bookcase. He rests in the office, waiting until I figure out his new place of prominence. We bought a 1965 house from the original owners. They left behind all the appliances, including the washer-dryer and an extra freezer in the garage which I fill with bags of berries and extra meat for the winter. We love it! They also left a hideous brown refrigerator in the "rec room." My husband converted it into a kegerator, and it has become his pride and joy. They left a ton a garbage, like one of those old hot curler sets with the plastic hood and hose, and a giant metal desk we gave away on craigslist. Plus terrible drapery and dusty plastic flower arrangements and some terrifying plastic accordian-style shower doors. We have done countless trips to the dump inthe four years we've owned the place. They seemed like wonderful people, though, and we're grateful for the good mojo they left behind in the house. When Previous Homeowners Leave Useful Items Behind |

I LOVE the look, but would never consider storing firewood in my home due to extreme fear of fire. Also, bugs. Also, spiders. Also, mold. Do or Don't: Stacked Firewood |

I just did this to my hideous 70's era kitchen cabinets last weekend. The transformation is nothing short of miraculous. We went from embarassing eyesore to Martha Fabulous after two days' work. My husband will find me standing in the kitchen, just staring at the new paint, mouth agape. Hope it lasts long, without too much chipping... An original oil painting of Tom Selleck circa Magnum PI executed by the previous owner of the house. We wrote it into our offer and it hangs proudly near the fireplace. What's the Weirdest Thing in Your Home? |
