I'm an American interior design gal and over the years had become a little bored with our orderly rooms, perfect scale and balance, everything matching just so, and looking a bit precious, like a model home...and not so much that there's anything wrong with that, especially if that if what makes your client feel good in their home, i was just feeling the need to break the rules a little, mix it up, even discover the quirky side of client that they might like to explore. That's when I discovered the British vibe, through outlets like domino and living etc. Magazines. It was a super graphic eye opening wow, and whereas I sometimes look at those free spirited rooms and think , whoa that looks crazy, I have to say I always admire the freedom and spirit behind it. I have also come to understand, that when a client hires you as their designer, they are struggling on some level to achieve the space of their dreams, and really appreciate being pushed a bit out of their comfort zone. i would wallpaper either side of the fireplace in : WTG-079289 thybony shimmer. it has a creamy white background with large scale black waves. it would pick up the pattern in the carpet. then i would paint the center top of the fireplace the same color as the whole fireplace below. i would use the glass shelves because they are light and not distracting. then i would do a well edited display of books and objects. then i would add these bookcase lights that clip on the shelves from ballard. it would be a very relaxed hip english vibe. They (someone) says you can't fall in love with inanimate objects (or in this case space), but after seeing this post, the first I have been compelled to respond to (in three years). i say, "OOOhhh yes you can. i am in love with the light, the sexy texture of the walls, the cat languishing on the sun drenched stairs, and the bedroom...uhmmm excuse me, i need a cigarette... and i don't smoke. falling hard for this space. i feel a poem crossing my vision!
