DodieGoldney: I'd like to add on to what lolagirl suggested. As a #3, you could get grout whitener, which is essentially a paint-like coating which soaks into the surface of grout but easily wipes off of tile. I did this in 2 bathrooms and after nearly a year it's still holding up well! Details here: http://whoisamelia.blogspot.com/2012/03/bathroom-misadventures-part-2.html

I recently painted a bathroom black and I love it! It's very dramatic, especially in a small space. I think the key is to have plenty of balance with light - light colors and/or light sources. I have a white vanity, floors, and ceiling, and kept the walls white around the shower. And then a great lighting fixture makes up for a lack of natural light. I don't see any issue with makeup, shaving, etc. but we had to play around with wattage & types of light bulbs for the most natural look (a little yellow)

Paint Color Portfolio: Black Bathrooms

I have a small guest room which doubles as an office, so space is tight. I spent a good chunk of time looking for an affordable and compact sleeper sofa. My favorites were Room & Board's Encore pictured above, as well as CB2's Flex Sleeper (similar to the Blu Dot one above), but didn't feel like their quality met the near-$1000 price tags. So I turned to the interwebs and found this gem at Walmart (!!!)

Mine doesn't have the split back (you can kinda see it here: http://whoisamelia.blogspot.com/2011/09/sneak-peek.html), but the faux leather feels like the real thing, and it hasn't shown dirt or wear in spite of daily use. Under $200!

Also re: #2, I can comment on applying the art principle to rugs. In my parents' previous home, they selected the wall paint colors for the entire house from a single, oversized rug in the living room. This method was suggested by a family friend who is an accomplished interior decorator and it worked very well - the colors were extremely varied but coordinated and it was not obvious at all how they tied together. To reiterate the point a few others have made, I think it's more about pulling inspiration from something you love or know you will have in your home to ensure your art, walls, floor, etc. complement one another; not so much about being matchy-matchy or force-fitting anything.

Re: dark walls in a small bathroom, I'm in the process of posting photos of my black bathroom to my blog if anyone is interested! The before (white) and after (black) can be seen here http://whoisamelia.blogspot.com/2012/06/bathroom-facelift-part-1.html

4 Things To Consider When Picking A Wall Color

I agree with Duane Hill. If you want to keep the dark counter tops, embrace the contrast! I painted the cabinets in 2 bathrooms in a nice simple white. One bathroom has a black vanity top and light walls, and the other has a white vanity top but dark walls - both work well and the light/dark contrast is nice.

I'd recommend painting the walls a slightly darker neutral color like a warm grey or mauve. This will maintain contrast with the dark counter top and light/white cabinets, but de-emphasize the contrast you currently have between the floor/shower tile and the walls.

You could also frame the mirrors and paint them to match the cabinets (just google search "how to frame a mirror")

#4 is a great point! We followed this rule in a small bathroom with no windows - now painted nearly black! (but balanced with plenty of white) It's very dramatic, clean, and modern looking vs. being so blah in its previous life as light blue.

4 Things To Consider When Picking A Wall Color

This looks great!! I'm considering a kitchen renovation myself and am always looking for inspiration like this. It's so refreshing and playful, and such a dramatic change with much more light.

My only hesitation is with regards to cited upcoming changes. Right now the look and feel of the room (at least in the photos) is light and airy with a vintage / farmhouse / cottage feel. Adding a dark gray or black counter top doesn't seem to fit, in my opinion. The contrast between the green bottom cabinets and a lighter color seems much more suitable and friendly. Just a thought!

yes! I bought my first home (a small condo) almost 2 years ago and followed many of these guidelines to deal with being housepoor. I'd also add as pointers:
1) Practice patience! It can take a long time to find the right items at the right price, so it can be months or even years before your home starts to take shape and feel like "you". Doing some research can help inform what you can get cheaply or for free and where it's worth making an investment.
2) Remember you aren't married to anything you get - half the fun of decorating is the process and seeing how a space can evolve as you add and replace things. You can always craigslist something you don't love! (I did this with a $30 coffee table purchase, resold for $100)
