I put off having my hardwood floors refinished professionally because I thought it would cost a fortune. When I finally got an estimate, I could have kicked myself for waiting. It was far less expensive than I had expected. Call several professionals, discuss refinishing vs. painting and get estimates. Even if you decide to do it yourself, you will have received some expert advice. Should I Paint or Stain My Hardwood Floor? Good Questions |

I write a daily mid-century design blog, and my son-in-law sells MCM furniture, and I don't know how anyone could call a classic chair by Hans Wegner, a beautiful sofa by Peter Hvidt or a gorgeous handmade bench by George Nakashima "trendy" or wish to see them dead and buried. The mid-century items that we generally refer to as "googie" or "kitsch," however, aren't my cup of tea. Been There, Done That: Designers Weigh In On "Worst Trends" Elle Decor |

I agree that granite has been done to death. When I bought my 1950s ranch style home, the kitchen already had stainless steel countertops. At first I wasn't sure I'd like them, but I do...very much. They're easy to keep clean, and they add a nice mellow glow to the muted greens, grays and browns in the room...none of the cold lab look I was afraid of. I truly love the designs of Jens Risom and the housewares of Russel Wright. I'm also a fan of Adrian Pearsall, especially his sofas, which have sold very well in our shop recently. There are many Milo Baughman pieces I admire as well. Classic American Style: Mid-Century Modern American Style |

The last house looks like most of the homes built here in North Central Texas in the early 80s. If I drove by that house, it wouldn't occur to me to call that a mid-century ranch at all. Reconsidering the Ranch House American Style |

And to Alan Hess I'd say, "Speaking of Big Macs, how do you think the term McMansion came about?" I'd love to be around to see if the tract homes of today are still treasured 60 years from now like our mid-century ranches are. Reconsidering the Ranch House American Style |

I neglected to mention that dealers in our area generally keep from 30-50% of the selling price of a consignment item, with most leaning toward the high end of that range. Some owners may think that's a lot for the dealer to keep, but when you consider that the dealer generally picks up/unloads the piece, advertises it, and provides the manpower necessary to sell the item, in addition to which it's taking up floorspace on which he's paying all the rent and utilities, it's not really not an exorbitant fee. I agree with Taureg. Very often people see pieces listed online for thousands of dollars and get their hopes up, only to have them dashed when they realize that only a very few established, high-end galleries or shops can command prices like that. Selling on CL or to a dealer, an individual is likely to get much, much less. Where To Sell Ed Wormley Magazine Rack? Good Questions |

The year was 1969, and I was 21. We did things a lot younger then (like getting married at 18) but not always a lot wiser. Would that I had waited till I was in my 30s to buy my first houseful of furniture, thus avoiding the sculpted velvet and heavily carved wood craze (and the conquistador picture behind the sofa)! After being so negative about the bookcase tree, I thought it might be nice to offer an alternative. The cutest idea I've seen lately is suspending a large branch from the ceiling with clear fishing line and hanging ornaments from it. The one I saw was painted silver, but it could be left natural or painted any color. I'm considering doing one in silver with chartreuse and turquoise ornaments. Not Your Average Christmas Trees |

I'm a retired librarian, and I agree with some of the others. The bookshelf tree makes me cringe. Books in a library are regularly "weeded," but who has access to that many books past their prime? I'm thinking the books and magazines in the picture are being prematurely aged. I love the wall collection tree, but who would want that many holes or pieces of tape on their walls? I don't know how much you spent on your splurge, but I'm sure it's worth every penny, since it's a highly desirable Broyhill Brasilia chest from the early 60s. No wonder you couldn't stop thinking about it! Are you going to restore the doors to their original finish? If so, it will be even more valuable. When is Something Worth A Splurge? |
