I second @Larsie's recommendation of "The Read Aloud Handbook" by Jim Trelease. In it he provides research data that supports the importance of reading aloud to children as early and often as possible. It also has a list of age/grade appropriate book recommendations and summaries in the back. Really great book.

When cooking rice on the stove, spray the lid with non-stick cooking spray! It will help prevent your rice from sticking to the lid and boiling over.

@notyou - I agree with @jenstiles. I have Kura beds for my girls and we climb up in the bunks with them for story time every night. Even my husband fits who is 6'2".

We did not buy the IKEA mattresses for the Kura beds and were not obligated to buy one either. They seemed too flat and not very supportive, but we were careful about the mattress we put up there. The puffy pillow-top kind were too tall and we felt there wasn't enough of a lip to keep the kids contained. Standard US twin mattresses fit fine, even with a sheet, blanket, and a quilt tucked in.

If anyone is looking for an alternative to an airbed, for about the same price you can get a nice cot - I got one at LLBean that has wooden slats. It keeps your guest up off the floor, which is really great if you have older folks visiting. It folds in half and can be stored under a bed or a sofa. I added an foam topper for extra coziness. Initial feedback is that it was far more confortable (and warmer) than an air mattress.
