Definitely go for the Breville convection Smart Oven if they are available there. They aren't crazy expensive (though they are much more expensive than a useless "toaster oven" IMO). I use mine for everything. It has a small footprint but the way it's shaped, by curving the back wall inside, you can fit in a full 13" pizza in there. You can bake cookies, do roasts, etc. etc. Perfect for 2-3 people. And Breville is a really solid company with quality stuff and they back up their products.

Yeah, stairs without handrails freak me out. I've fallen down enough stairs WITH handrails lol

I have the Eton solar wind-up radio (the exact same as the American Cross version but without the logo). Actually, we have two. I highly recommend it. We were under a rare tornado watch here in the Greater Toronto Area and between the Eton radio and my ham radio for CANWARN updates, we felt really safe. (Not to mention, of course, a ton of supplies like non-perishable food in our cold room, water, a collapsible water jug filled up immediately with water for washing/dog/etc., plenty of bright LED flashlights, and so on). We also have two smallish NOMA UPSs so that we can keep our internet modem and router powered through blackouts and one for other tech.

One never can be too prepared.

Oh, and coworkers who get political or religious and aren't squelched by management out of fear for some sort of lawsuit or, more commonly, because they agree with the coworkers. You'd be surprised how many people i've worked with decide that they must share their enthusiasm for Jesus with me and/or tell me why being gay is such a bad thing.

And frankly, the defensiveness of many of those who don't like reading (legitimate) opinions from those who wouldn't buy a used mattress seem to indicate that they have some sort of inferiority complex.

Tips for Finding a Mattress on Craigslist

I have to laugh at all the ridiculous "it must be nice to be rich and privileged and not have to buy used mattresses" and all the whining about "judgmental" comments.

As tequila red says above, just because people have different priorities than you do doesn't make them rich or privileged or snobby. I'm sure most people who claim to be so "poor" can afford to smoke or drink or have a latté or whatever. Most people reading this site on their nice computers with internet access aren't "poor", let me remind you.

And so what if we're judgmental? The very act of having an opinion and sharing it here in a public forum requires judgment. Those who get all defensive about people who wouldn't touch a used mattress (or couch or X) with a 10-foot pole are also being judgmental.

What is it with people posting on the internet that have to get all pissy because, God forbid, someone on the internet DARES to disagree with them and has a differing opinion? The comments section is here for readers to engage with the site and share their opinions (and, cynically, to drive more traffic to the site with keywords, google rankings, etc., etc.). That's a feature of a blog, not a bug, people.

Ewh, no way in hell that I would buy a used mattress. Please. Germs, mystery stains, semen, bed bugs, and/or lice/scabies/other creepy crawlies, no friggin' way! That is one area in life you don't cheap out on. That and decent shoes. You can go without coffee for a year if you have to, but you gotta have a decent bed.

Don't touch the Keurig with a 10-foot pole. I'm on my third so far. It keeps breaking down, backpumping water into the chamber and eventually will LEAK everywhere. Just look at the hundreds of horrible reviews online and on amazon. Seriously, stick to something better built like the Tassimo or maybe a Kcup machine by Breville but I would highly warn you against buying (or asking for) a Keurig coffee machine!

Add my voice to the list of people complaining that this post is NOT about dorm rooms at all. I would LOVE to see real-world, practical stylish solutions to dorm living.

Frankly, this has already been hashed out in the original thread from August 5th and earlier discussions (re: 'dormitorio'), that it's sort of shocking to see that this was reposted (again).

Yeah, no, that TV is waaay too low to the ground to be functional. We unfortunately discovered the same thing in our old house, where my mother had put a flat screen TV above the fireplace. Sure, it looked good, but nobody ever watched it because it killed our necks to have to look up all the time.

Now, in the new house, the TV is in a more neutral position, floating on the wall above a nice ikea cabinet. Everybody is happy, everybody wins.

Try to find a neutral position for your TV first before worrying about funky stylish options, or plan on never actually using that expensive flatscreen.

No Fridge for a Week! Do You Know Your Renter's Rights?
8/12/11 4:06 PM

This may be a bit of a naughty situation, but if you're really desperate and want to mitigate your losses (food-wise), then I'd go out and buy a $100 small bar fridge/dorm style fridge so I could at least have some milk/eggs/cheese/whatever until I get a new fridge. Best case scenario, you can return the fridge a week later (buy it at WalMart and not a local mom & pop shop lol). Worst case, you have a spare little bar fridge for $100 just in case.

Beautiful space, very bright and open and well-decorated without feeling cluttered. Very talented designer! She's also very lucky to have such a great canvas to work with, so to speak.

I love it. And not only does it LOOK sophisticated but it also FEELS personal, like you have a little glimpse into Shelby's personality, rather than being a pretty magazine space without any depth or soul.

@ArchDaring EXACTLY! How could you possibly not feel awkward? It's like serving someone a piece of your homemade cake and then hovering over them expectantly with your eyebrows raised as if to say, "Well? Isn't it GREAT? Tell me how great it is!"

Agree w/ Brody.

I think the problem is that as a guest, you would feel obligated to sign the book (especially if the host makes the effort to point it out) and guests shouldn't ever feel obligated to do something or put in an awkward position that might make them feel uncomfortable.

Maybe if it was something really wacky and that was your personality, it would work, like signing the wall or something (though to me that's reminiscent of a tacky slummy bar than a home).
