Thinking on Alice's comment right above mine here... any way of knowing if the fruit gets dried enough to store outside the fridge, or how long it would keep once in the fridge after drying? I would assume two weeks in the fridge after drying, just to be safe.

Mommy Montessori, I love love love this room and I'm excited to read your article! I'm a former Reggio Emilia teacher and I love the whole Reggio/Montessori style and aesthetic. Possibly going to set up a playroom similar to this if my husband relents on giving up his mostly-ignored office. I have twin girls as well, but mine are just six months old :)

Just want to give props for a gorgeous photo. I love that you can see the steam rising off the strawberries!

Just pulled mine out of the oven! My meringue browned pretty well before I even got a chance to take the parchment paper off, so I didn't put it back in for another 5-10 min (and my oven cooks things hot & fast, so I put it in for a bit less than the recommended time anyways). Hoping the cookie cooked enough underneath! I sprayed my parchment paper before putting it over the meringue, but I missed a few spots and the meringue stuck in those places-- I just hit my butter knife with cooking spray and gently eased the meringue off the parchment paper, and it looks fine :)

As a landlord, I have to say that if you want a nicer place, you'll either have to a) offer to pay more, or b) move. Not to sound harsh, but at least in my case, my husband and I are living off our one rental unit alone while I'm home with little babies and he's in school full-time, and we can't afford vanity upgrades so our tenants can have a more stylish living space than us! Necessities aside, of course-- if something is broken, unsafe, and/or in any way not up to code, well, that's just one of the downsides of being a landlord/owning property, but newly polished floors just aren't a priority.

No way... The idea grosses me out. Pets are dirty, I don't care if they spend all day licking themselves clean-- do I really want to rub my face on a fur-covered pillow? I'm happy to share my bed with my husband (and, temporarily, my newborn twins who sleep in in-bed bassinets); I don't need someone else taking up space, wiggling around at night waking me up, sticking his claws into my back, and covering our sheets with enough fur that you can never really get it out completely. Enough of my house is already covered in dog hair!

Our dog has a multitude of beds around our house, and one in our bedroom right beside the radiator, so he never wants for a cozy place to sleep. He's well trained, so he knows not to jump up on the bed.

That's why, as awesome as many I've known have been, I could never live with a cat. Cats think they're more in charge of your living space than you are, and you just can't keep them off counters, tables and beds.

TwoWheeler-- anti-bee hysteria? Seriously, now? I just don't want to be stung. It's plenty easy to accidentally happen upon a bee who perceives you as a threat; I don't know many people who go around poking bees with sticks! I don't think that sort of concern even requires a counterargument. And yes, plenty of people have allergy issues which can be life-threatening; they deserve to be even more concerned than I.

OMG, please, no one move next door to me and do this. I do not want tons and tons of bees near my house! Give me noisy chickens any day!

Gorgeous. I think I just need Martha's creative team to come live in my house for a week and do things like this to it. Although I do worry about the potential for children to not see the difference between "walls" and "walls that are designated for writing with chalk" if there's no clear delineation, i.e., no separate color for the "writing allowed" section. But if you don't have kids, I guess it's fine :)

Clutching my pearls-- a post about first-world problems and material possessions? On a home design blog?! *fans self furiously*

I wouldn't sell the china just to come up with the funds, personally, but I CAN understand space issues and how much one can realistically keep and use. My husband's father passed last year, leaving us all his worldly possessions, and much of it was beautiful, valuable items like china, crystal, linens, furniture. Sadly, not much in my style, but not things you give away or sell at a yard sale. And, ultimately, we DID sell a lot and give a lot away-- because we live in a two-family home and just can't fit it all; we were drowning in someone else's things. We kept what was most valuable to us and things that held meaning to my husband from his childhood, and everything else went out the front door.

If your windows are hard to open (like mine-- they require some muscle), couldn't you just open them from the top down rather than the bottom up? That way you still get a breeze and little guys can't reach the open part.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm especially liking the candlesticks idea-- we have a tall ikea bookshelf that we could put them on and my husband could easily reach but babies could not. Plus, the candlesticks would look nice without hats on top :)

What does it matter if tons of people have succulents, or Keep Calm posters, or whatever? How many homes do you own? I have one, and I'm going to put whatever I find beautiful in it, regardless of how many photos of similar homes show up on a few design blogs that, really, a handful of people in the world read. Do what you love!

Bought some at perpetual kid! And thanks for the heads-up... not only did I get some awesome cookie cutters, but I found a few new websites to window-shop (and probably actual-shop because, well, it's me) for quirky fun kitchen thingies!
