That "crappy cabin" in The Pelican Brief ("crappy" being the adjective used by Smith Kenn/John Lithgow to describe Gray Grantham's/Denzel Washington's cabin in the woods). For me, this qualifies as 'unforgettable' - it appears to be one large room with a bedroom area, which opens onto a living room with a fireplace and then, as the camera pans around, contains a small kitchen and dining area. It's been almost 20 years since that movie came out, but it's been an 'unforgettable ' getaway fantasy of mine.

The most insanely fun mirror installation I've ever seen is the Couture Kitchen by Alison Spear. It's on the Kohler website. Here's the link:

Reminds me of a vintage telephone switchboard from an old black-and-white movie. Number, please.

ChrisGal -- Not being sarcastic at all. I did not know it was possible to make a 9-1-1 call from an inactive landline (or whatever the correct term is). I apologize if I said anything rude or wrong. I do appreciate your help, and I believe in personal responsibility and being prepared (as much as possible.)

ChrisGal -- thanks for doing the research and following up with those links. I'll be in the Florida Keys during part of hurricane season. From the Consumer Reports link you provided, it looks like Florida might be a state with "soft-tone" requirements.
I'll do some more homework to figure out exactly what the current situation is in Florida. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

per kpaige13, "it is mandatory in the US to be able to call 9-1-1 from any landline, whether its hooked up or not. if you have a jack in your house and a phone to plug it into, you're still safe in emergencies if the cell phones don't work."

This is news to me. Can you reference a website for more info? (It's just hard to believe a person could call 9-1-1 from a phone with no dial tone. I'm not saying you're wrong; I'd just like to know how this works.)

I have to agree with bepsf - "Stainless Steel appliances are today's Avocado Green and Harvest Gold. Next appliance trend: Black Stainless"
As long as there are designers, decorators, manufacturers and consumers (especially consumers with varying budgets and varying confidence in their own taste), there will be trends. Some just last longer than others. Stainless is currently having its 15 minutes of fame.
Personally, I find kitchen trends ironic. Years ago, kitchens were small and looked 'homey'; even warm and inviting. People (usually a stay-at-home mother) fixed 3 meals a day in that little kitchen. Today, kitchens are huge with giant stainless steel appliances to mimic the look of a professional (or restaurant-style) kitchen. And yet, so few people actually cook in those kitchens.

With regard to the original question about what goes first, we don't have a video game subscription. No Netflix (we order DVDs online from the library and just pick up/drop off with the books).
The digital conversion actually pushed us into basic cable. (We bought a converter box and new antenna, only to discover we could not get digital signal from 2 major networks.)
Landline will never be cut off for reasons mentioned by Elizabeth II, swbird, and others. If you live or travel anywhere near a coastline, cell phone service is marginal. And when power is interrupted, a landline (not just a cordless phone) is mandatory.

I just bought a 'nearly new' Ballard Designs outdoor rug at Goodwill for $20. It's jute with a lovely blue stripe; about 5" x 8"; perfect in every way (especially the price).

I thought Etsy was exclusively handmade items. The vintage items and retro sunny dishes and tablecloth are delightful, but they don't seem to be crafted by hand. Recycled is great, but these cause me to lose faith in one of my favorite websites.

Before and after photos would really be helpful. I tend to agree the $1,000 headline is misleading. As kristian posted, they spent $1,000 on the large print in the dining room (before shipping expense, before stretcher costs, etc.)
Since this is a rental, a person could draw a line between costs sunk into a rental renovation (i.e. paint) and costs associated with her own personal property that she can take with her (i.e. the art)
Some nice inspiration; some things aren't my taste.
The budget breakdown is helpful because she sourced quite a few items from big box stores and outlets. However, part of me wishes she had shopped at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore, etc. So thrifty, and so 'green'.

Well done, and on so many levels.
After reading the original story in the Herald Leader, I'm wishing I still lived in Lexington. The video is so much better executed than the Nate Berkus video (I'm not comparing Nate's place to this room; just the video styles.)
And yes, Chrysilla, the newspaper confirms it is R2D2.

carlitadee and grafxnerd -- I'm with you.
As long as videos are posted with the "NYPD Blue" style of jumping around, jerky camera motions, etc, then print magazines will thrive. That style may be fine for the Blair Witch Project, those of us interested in design and decor want to study the images.
That said, Nate's a cutie, and his apartment is probably very nice. (I say 'probably' because I can't really see it very well.)
