you could "distress" the wood a little by sanding it. i'm sure that would be a mess but it looks like the cedar has a sheen on it (a laquer?) and if that wasn't there it would be awesome! don't you have to sand it down anyway if you are to get paint to stick? right now it does have a little of an early 80's oak look though it's not really bad. i would hate to see paint go over cedar. yeah, i've got someone downstairs from me who doesn't like my noise. Notes, communication, direct contact...it's apartment living. We do our best- but the best way to combat noise and wants of quiet is ...get a house. Other people don't always live like you want them to. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Neighbors Project Blog |

I canât do carpet (unless itâs unusual circumstances) island kitchens from the early 80âs (the oneâs that look out into the living room), vertical blinds, drop ceilings, sliding windows (maybe not a total deal breaker â but for sure not a favorite), ceiling fans (especially the big gold and brown oneâs) â if it matches the ceiling and the ceilings are high OK. Oh! I almost forgot â fiber board paneling (the real deal is pretty nice- but I NEVER see it). Apartment Therapy San Francisco | AT on... Apartment Deal Breakers#comments |

I like the cabinets. In the picture the holes make the cabinets look modern and simple. take off the doors if you can't handle it- and for the fear of visual clutter you will have to make sure your dishes look nice/ are organized to display. then it should really be ok. Yes. Black chalkboard paint would be the best. I think you would be best making the cabinets look simple- so fill in the pull holes and paint over them. And if you can't handle the walls, you can always get a sheet of plywood or metal from home depot and put in on the wall. It's really cheap to go there and get a few pieces cut. And about the floor you could always get one large grass mat from ikea. I bet with the paint, mat and plywood (painted) would cost under $50. i like that your space doesn't seem all out of control expensive. Your style- which appears effortless- is my favorite kind of small space entry! Obviously you have tons of style but aren't owned by it. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Northwest #2: Erin & Danny's Little Slice of the City |

i have the ikea table and matched it with 4 white gilbert chairs. I love it. The combo really works well and the shapes aren't distracting... but just dramatic enough. Apartment Therapy Chicago | CHI Good Questions: Chairs to Go With the Docksta? |

i so agree with the comments about the fireplace! paint that...or do something with it. Paneling isn't bad unless it's the horrid cheap stuff. Yours looks like authentic wood and cozy- cabin-like! a nice rug and light furniture seem like they would be great in here...and some curtains. i say keep it simple and work on bright accent peices...no need to overdo it/ create more work for a room where not much is wrong. as a kid my mother would wash our chandelier from a ladder and a white cloth and a damp cloth with windex. Much like the showroom person, it takes a long time...i would just take the time and make it sparkle. Our's always looked great...it's still in mint condition - after 30 years. at near $500,000 that is hardly affordable! at least not for me - ever. but i live in seattle and know how expensive housing is...and know how crappy new places are, and look (cheap). so this is cute- but i know true that a nice fix up of a store front rental in many communities (ok, maybe not in seattle) would be way cheaper. check out craigslist- chicago ...places like this go for about $1200 per month. oh dressers are the best storage! ...and they take on the look of the room when simple enough- I have an 8 foot retro one i picked up for $50 at a thrift store for my living room... it holds my record player and TV and then another distressed one in my kitchen that i found on the curbside- i store food in it. all ikea in a space, ceiling fans, black kitchen appliances, vertical blinds, installed carpet, hallow doors, space heaters, low ceilings, bad lighting, oak cabinets, cereal boxes on the fridge, window "treatments", rooms centered around a tv, brass fireplaces, paneling. there, i got it all out. i'm a pretty good host, but i hope my guests don't need all that most of you comment on. for myself, i would never expect all of this for free i would stay in a hotel! it's very nice if hosts give you a lamp, crispy clean towels and a side table, but why would you expect this? not everyone has the money or time.
