Thanks so much, Sea. It was lots of fun working on the article -- just as it was participating in the Small Cool 2007 contest. Really appreciate all the feedback... -D

In answer to your question, GothamTomato: "Aside from just being disgusting, is there any disease you caan get from bb bites?"

Per Dr. Dickson Despommier of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, one of the experts I interviewed for my THIS OLD HOUSE article "Bed Bugs!" http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/interiors/gallery/0,25895,1548781,00.html:

“As far as we know,” he says, “they don’t have the capability of transmitting diseases. That’s important to point out, because it’s easy for people to overreact to these things.”

Two things:

1) I have a ton of Bolon in my small, cool (2007 AT honorable mention!) apartment -- about which, by the way, I wrote THIS OLD HOUSE photo-gallery article that was published online just last week. Check it out at http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/interiors/gallery/0,25895,1629897,00.html. Like Amy, I must confess that I love this stuff.

2) That said, however, I'll admit that at the time I started purchasing it, I hadn't seen the award-winning documentary "Blue Vinyl", which is definitely worth a look. Check out their website at
http://www.bluevinyl.org/animation.htm. Had I known then what I know now about vinyl's "life" cycle...

...and it can also be accessed directly at...

Re: Homasote... When I was researching it, I was told it works best as sound barrier when 1) two layers are used, and 2) they're separated by at least a few inches of air space. -D

Good Questions: Best Wall Soundproofing Company?

Julianna's on to something when she writes, "Will there be a band?"

Seems to me the band's the key. What type of music? If it's 80s punk, you're set: Just turn the dance floor into a mosh pit, and you'll have more than enough room.

Or have them play something down 'n' dirty and encourage lap dancing. That'll double your seating capacity.

Good Questions: Will Everyone Fit at Our Wedding? (or are we screwed?)

Can't speak to your specific question, never having used either company, but it occurs to me that you might save a ton of money if you approached this as a DIY project. Late last year, I helped a friend construct a sound barrier in a redundant bedroom doorway using Homasote, and it worked like a charm.

Searth the AT website for a recent posting on Homasote; lots of good discussion about this cool stuff (one of the original "green" home-building products). Also, check out the company's website http://www.homasote.com/ for info on their 440 SoundBarrier® material.

Hope that helps,

Hey now, hdtex. It's neither self-righteous nor Nazi-like to desire considerate neighbors!

Listen, I understand that the great outdoors is about the only place left these days where folks like you can work on your lung tumors in peace, but all the rest of us ask is that you keep in mind where those noxious fumes are going...

In summertime, my immediate upstairs neighbor often hangs out his window for a smoke, just like the lady in the picture. And yes, I know when he's doing it, just from the stink that wafts in my window. Plus (and here's the really obnoxious part) I often find ashes in my ledge planters in the mornings when I'm weeding or watering my plants. Now c'mon, even you can't claim that it's considerate to use your downstairs neighbor's garden as your personal ashtray, can you?!?

One time, when I smelled him up there, I stuck my head out the window, looked up, exchanged pleasantries about the lovely evening we were enjoying, and then politely asked him if he'd refrain from flicking his ashes in my Sunpatiens. With equal politeness, he assure me he would. And for a time he kept his word. And then he went right back to his nasty ways.

Surely you can understand my frustration...

Damn: just two days ago I bought and used five 16-quart bags of Miracle-Gro Potting Mix from my local hardware store. I'd much rather have given my money to this Terracycle company. Well, lesson learned... -D

Thanks so much for the feedback, folks. I’m gratified that so many of you seem to appreciate my “more is more” aesthetic. And I love to have provoked such spirited discussion -- almost as much as I love the praise, which is extra-special coming from residents of my former adopted hometown. (I lived in Wrigleyville for the two years immediately following my undergrad days and before I moved to NYC…)

To answer some of the speculation, yes, I save the mags in part because I'm a former staff editor and current freelance writer; some of them contain pieces I’ve written, and all of them frequently prove to be essential reference materials. Beyond the work component, though, I proudly admit that I save because I’m a packrat at heart. To me, the stuff we all accumulate can be a rich archive of the past and a wonderful source of inspiration for the future, as long as we don’t let it overrun the present!

Speaking of organization, months before I even entered Small Cool 2007 I was asked by the online editor at This Old House http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh to do a photo-gallery article on my apartment; the focus is on how someone such as myself, with no formal training in interior design and little carpentry experience (beyond high-school shop class), can through trial and error successfully tailor a small space to his individual needs. Tentatively entitled “This Old Studio Apartment”, it’s slated to run in early June. I think it’ll answer many of the numerous questions posed by commenters on my Small Cool entry page, as well as show lots of other cool (in my opinion!) elements that I couldn’t show in just three pictures. I’ll try to remember to post the URL when the piece is finally live on the site…

Best,
Daniel

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Homasote's excellent sound-insulating properties... Recently used it to close off a friend's extra bedroom doorway (two 1/2" sheets on either side, separated by about four inches of air), and the new "wall" actually transmitted LESS sound than the plaster walls adjacent. Definitely a cool product, and a green one, to boot -- decades before green was trendy! -D
