Or, use the bowl method for a bit more fanfare. Google "garlic bowl trick" for Saveur's "How to Peel a Head of Garlic in Ten Seconds" article. You have to use at least two cloves of garlic for it to work, according to The Gleaming Retort's post " So Why Does the Garlic Trick Work?"

Wow, I agree with everyone who has said the space has lost it's panache and oomph. While I didn't love the yellow, per se, I loved the warmth and finished look it gave the room. The white/grey seems cold and stark and as if it's an blank canvas. I hope you bring some additional elements back in the room to being back the wow factor. Maybe some art on the walls or something else.

A lot of people clearly don't live in areas prone to floods or hurricanes. Many times, at the times the homes are built, they aren't IN flood plains. Changes and growth in the area over time may have put them in a flood plain. For example, areas which have never flooded in the past are now experiencing flooding due to population growth and overdevelopment of land resources - new homes are being built in areas that previously absorbed excess water, too many homes are crammed in and they are constructed on ground that was built up higher than neighboring homesteads, all of which contribute to flooding problems for older homes in the area.

Ew is right! I could like that tea set in another color - green, blue, yellow, purple, etc - but bloody-red? Gross. Looks like a crime scene. Not appetizing.

@ david@justveggingout - I was/am just like your roommate in college. For all of those who say it's lazy, you should know that some of us have a very difficult time getting up at the time we need to get up, regardless of what time we went to bed, how long we slept, or how many alarms we set. I used and still sometimes do turn my alarms off in my sleep without even remembering that I did it. Even when the clock was across the room or in the adjacent bathroom. In college, I had an alarm clock that sounded like a continuous bullhorn that sat right above my head and I would sleep right through it for upwards of half an hour. I have yet to find an alarm clock that really gets me up save natural sunrise or 9AM.

I disagree with all of the comments that adding a mantle is a must. You don't have a lot of space already when walking from the entry to the kitchen, so why would you want to intrude on that with a mantle?

I would convert it to gas, install modern glass doors on it, remove the tile around it and remove the hearth (integrate into the surrounding floor to give the appearance of more space) and then you can hang a painting or mirror or some art collection above it. Or, as suggested previously, relocated the fireplace a couple feet higher on the wall and then it will be like a piece of art in it's own right.
