Have you seen appliance art? It's similar to the products listed above, but it's magnetic and really easy to apply to your fridge or dishwasher. Check out the "instant stainless" category (plus, I think the "instant chalkboard" could be fun)

Isn't this similar to cooking steel cut oats in a crock pot overnight? I use a different ratio (i think whatever is on the tin) for the slow cooker, but isn't the concept similar?

This post is perfect timing - I've been trying to find a navy to paint my kitchen. Cabinets are white, floor is wood, and soon the backsplash will be white subway tile with gray grout and the counters will be... something...

I have a similar kitchen, and echo the comments above about track lighting. I installed hockey puck under cabinet lights, and put them on a dimmer. I also have a single light above on a dimmer. This gives me more lighting options.
But if you're not sure about under cabinet lighting, try these out for about $20 - they plug into a regular electric socket and you can use adhesive for a temporary installation. You'll probably want to reconfigure for permanent use, but this will let you see what it looks like before committing. You can also try different kinds of light this way (halogen, xenon, etc).
