I think most people take issue with the author mentioning it at all. It's not relevant to the tour, so why even include it? And frankly, it does seem in poor taste to me to "rush home" to keep the tour appointment in the words of the author. Whether it's true or not, it does imply misplaced priorities. Whether those were the priorities of the author or homeowner or both isn't clear.

Umm..yeah. Wanted to like the tour until I read about the baby. AT couldn't reschedule the tour? I get that Dad may have been home with the other two kids anyway, but the wording implies that having their home photographed was a higher priority. Let's hope it was just poor writing.

Love the library space and love Anne Lamott. Best book on writing I've ever read.

Yep, it's all contingent on what works best for you and your family. It's actually cheaper to own than to rent where I live, especially if you want to be in a good public school district. That's obviously not the case everywhere. I agree with the PP though about being sure you have enough savings to carry you long term in case you do lose a job so you're not trapped by a mortgage.

Looks great! I agree that a pop of color on the front door could be fun--but you've earned a good long rest to enjoy your hard work! I also would be concerned about termites with that raw wood right by the house--maybe you don't have termite problems in CO?

Love the dining room table! I'm sure it's a zillion dollars though....looks antique or handmade.

Burp cloths or old cloth diapers are great for dusting. You can buy the burp cloths in a 20 pack at WalMart, etc. I wear a sock like a mitten to dust the slats on my plantation shutters after I've gone over them with the brush attachment on the vacuum first.

Love the house, esp. the brick floors and the green kitchen cabinets. But I'm horrified there's a publication/website called "Garden & Gun"...I get the affinity for roots as a Southerner...it is complex--there are parts of Southern heritage of which we are proud, but obviously there's the legacy of slavery, having lost the Civil War, Jim Crow, etc. and that's part of our Southern heritage also.

I hate white walls. Too blah and cold for me. To each his/her own. We bought our current house two years ago and the master was white. We left it to see if it would grow on me, but it hasn't. I have half a dozen paint samples on the walls now and hope to get it painted in a couple of weeks.

Lucy Worsley was a guest on NPR's Fresh Air when the book first came out. Very interesting interview. Here's a link: http://www.npr.org/2012/03/13/148296032/if-walls-could-talk-a-history-of-the-home She's a curator for some of the royal residences in/near London, if i remember correctly.

love this! Of course I love quilts and vintage textiles, so I'm sure that's a big part of it. And that color scheme (red, blue & yellow) is one of my faves.

I actually love the kitchen. I'm so happy to see something other than granite and I've had corian before and love how easy it was to take care of.

Re: the quilt hung in the playroom---I think it's printed fabric, not an actual quilt. Love the idea of hanging a quilt that way, but like the previous poster mentioned, I think it's too heavy.

Totally agree with the visible tangled wires...I'm moving into a different workspace that has this issue and I have to fix it or I'll go nuts looking at day in and day out. Totally want a laptop and wireless router so I can ditch the desktop altogether in the new space. Design allergies that are holdovers from my childhood are metallic wallpaper and shag carpet. You can try to fool yourself and call it "frize" if you want to, but if you can lose Legos in it, it's shag!

Wow! I love Rodney White's work and I have two prints of his (happiness is a choice and Patience is knowing it will happen)...how cool to have met him and own an original! I personally find art galleries intimidating because I know next to nothing about art except if I like it or not. I'm more comfortable at art fairs and community events.
