Art can be had for a handful of dollars. Secondhand stores are the best place to find it. You can also make it, but if you're not artistic, just pop your head into thrift stores occasionally and eventually you'll find stuff you like for cheap.

To mke things look seasonal around here, I'm going to finish cleaning all my burning man stuff, mop the floors, and lay out my tiny rug. It stays put away during summer so that when I roll it out and bring out throw pillows suddenly everything feels cozy. Along with the tips about candles and pumpkins, I think it's going to be so warm and autumny!

We got our couch from LoveSac, it's one of their sectionals called Sactionals (yes, clever, I know.) It's sturdy and heavy and soft and squishy, I love it! It also comes apart seat-from-seat, and the backs and seats are seperate pieces. You can reconfigure the pieces any way you like and they still all slot together.

We got it after the professional movers couldn't get our old couch up the stairs of our new building. We will never have that happen again!

I would definitely recommend the Sactional. It's pricey, but I think it will last forever, or at least twenty years. :)

About the windows, just clean with white vinegar instead of chemicals and you won't get streaks. Works in hot weather and cold. Yay!

I saw some similarly swirly furniture on Fab recently painted in silvers and jewel tones. I personally LOVE the solid colors instead of the dated wood.

Also, we all have different tastes. Lets celebrate those differences!

This reminds me of the space that I had for personal things when I worked at a summer camp for years. Which seemed small at first but worked out personally. I don't see a reason that this wouldn't work even when the boys grow into their teens.

That said, having my own outlet made the space constraints manageable in that summer camp. Gadgets and phones and stuff. The lights over each bed are just right.

Well done on this! I love it for your three boys and I wold like to read about how you imagine this space will transition in the future to hold fewer of them.

My SO and I have such divergent interior design preferences that it's been a real challenge to find pieces we both like. And we were starting from scratch practically when we moved in together. He likes heavy, ornate stuff that you would find in an old castle or ren faire enthusuast's McMansion. I apparently like modern spindly things with no personality! :)

RH's light, airy, and kind of steampunky lights and occasional tables inspired our entire apartment. And saved us from a real argument. We both love the things we've found (not through RH but with their catalog in tow,) and intend to purchase some pieces from RH in the future.

They have great upholstered chairs in a wide range of neutral fabrics. Perfect for a small apartment where you don't want to commit to red forever, or want something that won't clutter up the room while still looking old and feeling substantial.

You could borrow the trading spaces idea and project that onto a wall before painting it. Easier than free handing it for sure, and I bet you could find an old projector at Goodwills or the Salvation Army for a few dollars.

This will definitely damage your hard back books. But so will storing them on a flat shelf at an angle. To keep your books in good shape, keep them either flat or standing straight with bookends.

When hardback bindings have a tilt to them from being poorly stored, you can say the book is "cocked".

If you have a high-efficiency washer, check with the manufacturer. Soaps not designed specifically for HE washers can, quite literally, gum up the works. It's messy and can ruin your machine. :(

I think the take home from this long list of comments is that no matter what your station in life, it is possible to have a small handful of possessions that improve your life in valuable and tangible ways. Everyone has at least one or two, and maybe more.

The trouble is finding that balance between something a little nicer, a little better than we would normally get for ourselves, and making a habit of buying "luxuries". When that happens it's a sign that one might be living outside of one's means.

Buy the best quality you can afford, but don't buy better. That just leads to empty pocketbooks and uneeded financial strain.

What To Do With Awkward Den Space?
Good Question

Lovely home, but it's so big that it feel empty. Even with all that furniture! Maybe take some of those groupings and put them diagonal in one or two spaces, to fill things up more?

I agree that it's a lovely home. I still vote for more small apartment tours please.

The best part about fireplaces, imo, is the hearth and mantel. We don't have a fireplace (or a need for one in our temperate climate) but I've seen some really awesome fake mantels and love them.

Absolutely clean as you go. Makes a huge difference.

My SO and I are finally getting our own apartment w/o roommates, and we're trying to figure out our personal organizational style. He'd live forever with piles of clothing on the closet floor. I can't. stand. it.

I think hanging shoe organizers on the door and some shelving with bins will be next.

Your Best Organizing Secret Weapon?

It's true- this is the storage space for a small household. However, I think that some of the techniques we see here are scalable.

*replacing paper and plastic containers with clear, reusable, and attractive containers makes things LOOK better right away, esp. if they are all the same size/type like in this example.

*put all those containers on one shelf and death to anyone seen putting other things on that shelf

*clear plastic tubs for grouped items that don't get used every day (baking supplies for instance) which then stay in an assigned corner

*the split-shelf-shelf thing is wonderful. I recommend, if you have a ton of people, use those to help store your dishes and create more space for food.

*do this with food too! instead of the lazy susan (personally I'm not a fan), get a stair-step spice shelf.

EVEN better, standardize spice containers. I'm a big fan of the clear-topped, magnetic backed containers. Mount a magnetic strip in your pantry and stick 'em on.

I dig these ones: http://www.custommagneticspicerack.com/

But yeah, there are a ton of option. Good luck!
