Fine Homebuilding as well as several architects I know have all declared Ikea cabinets to be a fine choice (though Fine Homebuilding recommended taking the money you saved and spending it on great, high end hardware.)

I second the Cistern, absolutely awesome.

My favorite restaurant in the whole world is Asitane. Amazing. Highly, highly recommend the stuffed melon.

Everyone and their brother will tell you to keep in neutral, but I've purchased 2 houses in my life, and both time (the second time in an over saturated buyers market) the houses that have color and are well decorated tend to sell immediately, at asking price (I call them "pottery barn" homes, that style seems to draw in the buyers.) While more neutral homes seemed to sit and sit and sit.

My agent claims most people don't have the imagination to walk into a house and imagine potential. They need to see a complete picture to peak their interest (that obviously might not be the case in a community like this, but might just be true of the greater, general public.)

To Paint or Not to Paint: Selling a Colorful Home?

My husband I and bought an older home last year (the french door style windows wooed me.) No central air at all, but I have to say, the radiant heat is so, so, so superior to the forced air in our previous, newer home. It's consistant, and because the air isn't moving, it feels warmer in spite of setting the thermostat 5° lower than we did with forced air. Sure, we have a few rough days in the summer, but there are plenty of air conditioning solutions to be had.

Renting, that's a tougher one, I went for charm, but when you're less free to make changes it makes it a rougher choice.

we just hung the star fixture I've been holding onto for 2 years up in our new house. Gorgeous.

But I really want to know more about that green tile!

I found a great one at Target on clearance. LED's were important to us, and the prelit version didn't have em', so we bought the unlit, separate LED's ad put it together ourselves. Still easy to take apart to store. It turned out to be a pretty great tree. Multiple people seemed to think it was real, and quite frankly, even though it'll never compare to the gorgeous $600+ tree I wanted, it was an amazing deal.

I'm positively DYING over the floor lamp in the living room. I have tried every creatively descriptive set of terms to search for anything similar and have found a couple of "similar" options, but they lack the right oomph. Owners, any additional info you might have on that lamp would be awesome!

Someone down the road is always going to lament some decision you made, whether it was faithfully restoring a feature they don't care for or altering one they do.

I personally am all for painting woodwork if you like the look (and yes, it's reversible. Time consuming, but paint can be stripped and wood can be refinished. I just toured a gorgeous bungalow where they have done just that very nicely.)

I found an amazing, beautiful card catalog being sold by a library that was remodeling (and buying new card catalogs rather than moving to computer!)

I went to see it, and was horrified by the ugly, laminate card catalogs that were also for sale, but there was mine... in all it's hardwod glory, the sole one of it's kind.

It was supposed to cost me $100, but they never cashed the check in spite of my repeated calls.

So, my free, hardwood card catalog is definitely my best craigslist find.

(my best sale was selling my house on Craigslist.)

#5, our problem was the agent selling the house we put an offer in on (through our very capable and awesome realtor.) She thought she should be privy to our most intimate financial details. When we wouldn't give her more details than she had a right to know, she called our bank and tried to weasel it out of them. When she couldn't get what she wanted, she declared us "unfit buyers" and told her client not to waste his time writing a counter offer.

6 months later, the house is still on the market, currently listed at less than our original offer.
