I ran into this problem once when some friends and I were doing an "around the world" dinner party and we were cooking the cuisine of Germany. We decided to make sausages. We went to our rather pricey, but local kitchen store to buy a sausage funnel and they didn't have one. The only item they had for sale was a sausage "kit" that had a cheapy meat grinder and all the accoutrement for $60+. Disinterested in buying that, our spirits deflated a bit. The clerk noticed and said "You know, in a pinch, you can cut off the top of a water bottle and use that." Boy was he right! We tried 3 different kinds of plastic bottles and found that the easiest one to use was a Minute Maid Lemonade bottle. Cost us $1 and is pretty much the exact same thing as a sausage funnel. I live in the same hood and have the same apt. I made the middle room my bedroom and the far room the living room. It's a pretty common set-up for the railroads of W-burg. It's not for everyone, but the far room allows for my sectional, which creates a better conversation area. Yes, friends have to walk past my bedroom to get to the living room, but my bedroom is cute, so I don't care...and like I said, it's a pretty common set-up in Brooklyn. My 2 cents: Put the couch together so that it's in the L shape and float it in the room. Get a rug to go under the couch define the space. Furniture doesn't have to be on a wall. I love the room.
