It needs another layer - throws, more cushions and pattern - and better lighting. A lamp at the end of the brown sofa furthest from the window would warm things up. There's a lovely shade of blue in the artwork, I would pick that out. What's Needed in This Room? Good Questions |

I would move the closet furthest from the door to the wall with the bookcase, and swing the bed round so the long side is against the window wall and the head is where the closet used to be. This will allow the bed to function as a sofa and free up some floor space for seating of whatever kind (or none) your daughter would like. Seating Options For Teen's Bedroom? Good Questions |

I use one of these electric Bialietti gizmos - http://bialettishop.com/EasyCaffeMain.htm. Perfect every time. I've had it for years and use it every day. I brew up a pot, pour it into a thermos mug and I'm good to go. It was expensive (I think), but it's saved me pounds over the years. How Do You Make Your Morning Coffee? Good Questions |

If you really won't be riding the bike until next spring, take the pedals off, and turn the handlebars so they're aligned with the frame - they take much less space that way, and you won't be catching on them if they're in a space you walk through frequently. Put all the bits and pieces in a ziplock bag duct taped to the frame so you can put them back together next March. Park It: Small Space Bike Storage Solutions |

The Feu de Bois candle burns wtih the authentic smell of a pine-y wood fire. Admittedly they're cheaper in the UK, but the Diptyque candles are totally worth it - the smells are all gorgeous, they burn cleanly, they throw fragrance even when they're not burning, and last for ages. Puttanesca is my favourite: tomatoes, canned, fresh, puree (it doesn't matter which), onion, garlic, anchovies, capers, olives. It's ready in seconds, difficult to make too much of, and goes brilliantly with pasta of course, but also on chicken and lamb, or just spread on bread A Few Good Sauces for the Solo Cook Cooking for One |

My mother uses the state of her bed to gauge the state of her day - 'I've not even made my bed yet!' means either she's been really busy and not got round to it or really lazy and not got round to it. Make Your Bed! For Productivity, Profit and Peace |

If I had to cook for a person with so many dietary issues, I would go the _clearly labelled and differentiated_ meze or tapas route - lots of little dishes of tasty morsels that they can pick and choose between. Also, there would be no embarrassment if they ended up being able to eat little or nothing during the evening. The Most Difficult Dinner Guest Ever: And 5 Delicious Meals To Feed Them |

Ask the contractors to give you a heads up when they're going to be starting early, finishing late or expecting to do particularly noisy, dirty or smelly work. Forewarned is forearmed, and you may choose to get out early, stay out late or decamp to a friend's sofa on the extreme days. Also make friends with the workers on the site - they're more likely to be considerate if you are nice to them than if you're making their life difficult! You don't want to be a doormat, but you're inevitably going to have to live with a certain amount of disruption, and a cheery hello or jokey comment will oil the wheels while you do. I'm not one for suspicions but my family had the worse run of luck for the few weeks we had real peacock feathers in the house - I had a bad accident at school, my father had a terrible car accident, my brother fell off his bike, the cat died, and so it goes on. While I love them, it wouldl take a lot for me to have the feathers or the pattern in my house ever again! Fine Feathers: A Brief History of the Peacock as Decoration Retrospect |

Man, I hate that stuff! My parents used to take us on camping holidays to France in the early seventies and my mother thought La Vache Qui Rit was the height of Gallic chic. I don't know what the general geography of the house is, but if you want to make the living room into a bedroom, why not make the bedroom into a living room? I personally would prefer the toddler to be happy and content to sleep in his/her own bed all night, but if there are reasons the parents don't want to do that, moving the entertaining space upstairs seems a sensible route to go. I don't dislike the blue, but the space needs warming up. Red or shades of terracotta or caramel would work well, I think. Also you need to get rid of the big lumps of black! Cream throws over the furniture with cushions would lighten the space a lot, and, if you can run to it, a more discreet tv would help a lot. Floor length curtains in the windows and to cover the back of the door would be good, as would a large rug to break up the tile. You also need to tidy up the coffee table. The most important thing, though, is, as others have said, the lighting! Table lamps, perhaps a floor standng lamp and some fairy lights or something just so all the light isn't coming from above! At the risk of being misinterpreted, that is what we in England would call a 'glory hole'. It's the place where you put everything that doesn't have a place anywhere else - your brooms, dustpan and brush, cleaning materials, dustbin bags, all that kind of clutter that you need to have, but doesn't have a natural home anywhere else. I would use it for that, and free up more useful and better-placed cupboard/drawer space elsewhere in your kitchen. How Can I Use This Small Kitchen Closet? Good Questions |
