we buy in bulk. it's SO hard not to when we live so close to BJ's... selling spinach in giant cheap packages is a great motivator to eat healthy. vitamins at less than half the price of target is motivation to take them. and hellllooooo to cheap gourmet cheese! we may have to buy our gorgonzola in huge blocks, but hey, I won't EVER complain about having too much cheese in the house ;)

my mom's friend has a CRAZY huge rhubarb plant, and me (lil city-dweller with no garden) wanted some of that rhubarb even though I live 600 miles away. luckily for me she chopped it up and saved some for me by freezing it! needless to say, I had delicious rhubarb jam in the middle of winter last year ;)

watercress at our neighborhood bodega is SO cheap! and so delicious. we recently used it in a modified version of thekitchn.com's crostini with strawberries and pea shoots recipe, but used watercress instead of pea shoots! see it in action here:

also, my favorite dish to make actually use watercress! beef and watercress stir-fry found here:

seriously you guys are all geniuses!! thanks for all of the great tips. unfortunately i had been staying in the cheapest downtown hotel in boston, where the fridge and microwave don't come standard to the extra-cheap, tiny room that i stayed in, and the awesome recommendations for making things in the coffee-maker wouldn't work either because they stock all rooms with keurigs :( all good thoughts for when i run into a similar situation in the future though! ....i will definitely be using the idea of making melty cheese sammiches with the blowdryer and grilled cheese sammiches with the iron. a small cooler and the ice machine are good thoughts, and if i wanted to cool something extra small like a small block of cheese, i suppose i could keep it inside the ice bucket with the ice... thanks again for the tips!!

i also think dinner parties are on the rise. we live in a tiny space, have no dining table, and yet we once hosted a group of 10 (8 guests). as long as we had a place to sit for everyone, they were good! we make the food, they bring the booze:

living in a small space in NYC is no excuse, IMO. everyone lives in a tiny space, so if your friends are too stuck up to come to a small space, maybe you should re-evaluate the friendship? i eat at the coffee table every night for dinner, why is it improper that they do the same at a dinner party?

i like hosting because it gives me a REAL reason to tidy up the place, too!

we are completely spoiled in jersey city (and the whole new york city area in general). the little groceries have the best produce, including cheap herbs in giant bundles, all year round. i'm not sure where it comes from, or how they can sell it so cheaply, but i'll take it! a giant bunch of basil at our local store (P&K in jersey city) is only $1.29, all year round. it's bundled in a twist tie, and the stems sit in water. it looks like someone literally just picked it from their garden. all herbs are like this, parsley, dill, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, practically anything we want! when we lived in hoboken we had a similar go-to store for cheap herbs, when the local Shoprite was selling tiny plastic packages of wilty basil for $3.99 a pop!

sounds so delish! we have a VERY similar dish with practically uses the same ingredients, except its flavored with leftover juices from pan-frying beef or pork (obvi this no longer makes it vegan or vegetarian, but it's SO good!)

our food processor came with an attachment that connects to the top that shreds... we use it ALL THE TIME for slaws. you just push your carrots or whatever through the top slot in the lid and it just shreds away!

(good thing this little treat was only $1.00 at the local middle eastern market!)

though i never drank coffee after 12:00pm anyways, when i stopped drinking it at ALL for about 6 months, i was naturally sleepy at around 9:30 or 10:00, which was the time to go to bed to get a good night's rest.... coffee tastes SO good, but ironically can be the enemy in staying awake and being sleepy at all the right times...

parmesan cheese! we never use a block before it goes bad, so we keep ours in the freezer and just grate it frozen!

walnuts and almonds. we buy them in bulk (SO much cheaper!) and we can never use them all before they get stale, so we freeze them to preserve at least a little bit of freshness.

frozen edamame. they make the perfect healthy snack when i'm craving something more than an apple. we buy our bags at trader joes, perfect for 2 people for a side or a snack, and they are only $1!

sliced, 2-person servings of flank steak. our favorite quick, cheap meal is beef and watercress stir-fry. we almost always have the beef in the freezer and ALWAYS have rice, so all we need to pick up is some watercress from the bodega around the corner and we're set... here's the recipe for anyone who's interested!

cheers!

plants. something with BIG BRIGHT green leaves. it will bring a LOT of life to the room i promise :)

go for philodendrons if you aren't a green thumb... they start small, will grow to be as big as you want or don't want, and you practically can't kill them.

good luck!
