Living in a loft with virtually no storage pre-configured into the space makes most of these suggestions irrelevant. I wouldn't even think about applying some of these to my practice office; comfort matters to people. Period.

Considering I don't have closets in my 1100 sq ft home and have but 2 doors (to the bathroom and exit), where would I store my clothes? As much fun as it might be to go around in my birthday suit all the time, a.) I'm not sure my patients (or you) would appreciate it? b.) would i survive the 4 distinct seasons of Chicago in said birthday suit? c.) would getting rid of my professional/ personal attire for the sole sake of getting rid of my one dresser really make life easier?

I agree with the "less is more" mentality to a point. Have what you love and love what you have, but these minimalism "gedaenksexperiments" are getting awfully hackneyed and trite, not to mention about a decade past their time. Don't you think?

What an adept coalescing of 'old world' sophistication and contemporary comfort... I agree with the author above who wrote, "if this is a hovel, sign me up."

I'm not sure which aspect qualifies as a favorite part: the PK22 chair sporting the tenant or the "bedcover: made by myself."

You've mastered the timeless "sensibly sophisticated" look... Simply stunning.

Have you considered filling in the top glass panels with the same material as the rest of the wall (drywall vs wood vs composite) and painting the entire wall white? The wood paneling on the ceiling makes the room look dark. Perhaps you could paint it white as well?

I'm generally not a fan of white-out but if it's a basement room without any true windows, best to maximize what light you do have with a light color and a satin or eggshell sheen.

Just a thought...

I agree that this style isn't suitable for residential use. My first thought was: "what an ingenious way to discourage people from loitering in the lobby of a hostel or contemporary euro-style motel."

Not a fan. Perhaps minimizing the color contrast and working with tessellation would provide a more cohesive approach to colorful whimsy sans the phrenetic hangover. Talk about a bad trip...

Heidi in NYC, Thanks for the thoughtful post and link regarding investment spending versus thrift.

So sorry, but I must add in the following:
Stackable machinists toolchest with tools = $1200
Pillows plus fabric = $100
large Jacobsen banker's wall clock (ebay) = $300

I forgot these:
linen drapery fabric, sheers and steel hardware = $600
sapien bookcases from CL = $300 / 2 units
a myriad of design and science books = $1000...

I'm with the furniture marker who balks at the idea of quality constructed furniture at less than "free" prices.

Living room:
Flor carpet 8x10 = $500
Room & Board linear console table = $450
Couch = $1200
Plasma TV = $450
Wii console + games = $300 (?)
Blu-Ray player = $120
FK leather armchair = $1200
Arne Jacobsen lamp from ebay = $300
Flea market side tables = $250
Knoll leather bench from CL = $300
Art + Frames = $500 (conservatively)
Cubitec storage system from CL = $150
...

I'd love to see some photos showcasing the thrifty design tour de force some of you guys and gals seem to have accomplished...

Last comment: DIY and upcycling are awesome but in my experience, purchasing quality tools and materials when coupled with the time invested in the project ultimately makes for little in the way of true dollar savings.

I agree that the thriftiness in these posts should be commended but I'm a little incredulous about the transparency (or lack thereof) of some posters. Furniture can be expensive (and quality that will last decades often is) but there are many other expenses to consider... rent, utilities, renno costs, lifestyle, etc. Is there a cash prize for "thriftiest AT-er" that I'm missing?

Also, few posters have really highlighted the relativity of furniture's intrinsic worth/value. In example, I just purchased a half-century old Fabricius and Kastholm leather armchair from Denmark and had it shipped over to the states for a combined total of about $1200. It took me 5 years to find and the price tag seems paltry when I consider all of the memories it conjures up spending time with my grandfather in a nearly identical chair as a child... considering I have only one surviving photo of him, this chair is priceless (in my own eyes).

Last, living in Chicago, I'm sympathetic to the posters who refuse to buy second-hand "soft" furniture. Do a google search for a map of "Chicago bed-bug infestations by neighborhood."

Better yet, don't. Ignorance can be bliss.

Hmm, intriguing idea but wouldn't mold and mildew pose serious cleanliness (not to mention health) concerns if tchotchke were strewn about the shower as in the photo above?

Kitchens could use more art. Shower stalls less so.

First, that renovation gives new meaning to the word, FABULOUS!

Second, what a fantastic credo to live by: "Life in the fun lane!"

OP, I like your style!

Beautiful house! I'm a little confused by the sink and faucet fixtures in the bathroom- a little too scullery-esque for my taste. Otherwise, simply beautiful - just the way i like it!

My last comment on this thread - promise!

Reviewing some of my comments, they did come across harsher than intended. GoldenRule, thanks for helping me see that. To Cozy Little Cave, your work is consistent and clean... Nice job on using your creativity to turn this attic stairwell into something unique.

@GoldenRule
Your point is appreciated BUT the post is absurd. Featuring a design idea like this on AT?

Frankly, when I have a bad/ impractical idea I'm grateful when someone can help me see another perspective. Sometimes you can learn a lot by listening to other people (rather than proffering an obsequious otherwise meaningless accolade like, "that looks GREAT!"

Online, I prefer honesty and tact to virtual hand-holding with strangers, but to each her own...

Great job on making your point!

Hmm, was there a mistake in the placement of the decimal in the size of this APARTMENT? I thought I was reading apartmenttherapy and not mansions-R-us?

It certainly humbles my grad student apartment... Well done (?)

*raises hand and nervously glances around the room*, my name is... and i am a project hoarder.

It's bad. I have various project items/tools strewn about nearly every room of my apartment and nowhere to really store them properly. It will be interesting to see what the DSM-5 has to say about that...
