Congratulations on doing it mostly yourself (and sharing with the rest of us)!

I'm solidly in the camp of those who could never do without a bathtub. I find a hot soak in cold weather to be so relaxing, but I understand a tub can take up a lot of space. I don't understand, however, the sentiment of people like the decorator on Junkraiders, who once made this snarky comment about how adults don't need bathtubs.

That "before" bathroom photo captures so much of what I've hated about the bathrooms in the apartments I've lived in--pink tub, tiles with flowery accents, acrylic sliding shower doors, beige tones, fake wood cabinets, vinyl flooring, Venetian blinds. I really like the cool color scheme of the renovated bathroom. I'd like to think the design will hope up better over time so that years later, the homeowner doesn't feel compelled to trash everything and install all new fixtures.

Coffee beans and other branded merchandise from local roasters has become one of my preferred items to bring home whenever I go out of town. I figure whoever I give it to will at least use it. I know more places now carry Intelligentsia coffee (whose logo I recognize on the cup pictured), but I will always associate it with Chicago!

Great, simple idea. I've seen pictures of logs split longitudinally (?--I'm trying to remember my geometric terms right now) sold as candleholders. Because of their half-cylinder shape, they might be more stable. Still, I like the simplicity of your candleholder, and it was free! I'd just watch out for any bugs in the wood.

@itsakitty, What you wrote describes perfectly why I dislike going to weddings! Spending money to fly around the country to go through this ritual and not even get to sit and talk to my friends.

@bepsf, My parents used to own and manage a restaurant, and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year were the only days they took off. They were convinced if they took any additional time off that the business would suffer, but that's difficult for a kid to understand, and I'm still not sure it was a good decision.

I'm not sure what motivates other restaurant owners to keep their places open on holidays. It's hard to imagine business being such that it'd be worth paying to have everyone come in. Those are the restaurant workers I feel sorry for, the ones who are already working most holidays and weekends but who are not entitled to even one day off with family because the restaurant owner is more concerned about profits.

@Kathryn, I like the idea of dinner alone at the Ritz Carlton. Were there many others celebrating by themselves or with one or two others?

My ex and I (and before that relationship, my roommate and I) would celebrate Thanksgiving, just the two of us. I lived in Chicago then, and I still remember my ex remarking that he loved being in the city over the holidays because everyone else left town. The city did indeed feel more peaceful.

I still wouldn't turn down Thanksgiving with family if cost of travel weren't a factor. I only see my family two or so times a year, so any time I do spend with them is welcome.

I love the pegboard orange. I was hesitant about using peg board in my own apartment because, well, it can end up looking a bit shabby, the board itself, but the orange makes it look like a piece of art.

Didn't even notice the white floor until Lisa (Montreal) pointed it out. I'm a proponent of white decor with pops of color. It'd be interesting to see what the effect would be if the books were rearranged by color.

I've read that there's a minimum you should keep your house at, even if no one is home. Might be 62 degrees or something. Part of it is ensuring pipes don't freeze, but there was also something about the amount of energy needed to kick-start a system that's heating up a very cold space.

Maybe trying to dry out the wood before it gets cold enough to use the fireplace? I love the pumpkins. There's something very comical about the way they're spilling out. I never thought to paint a pumpkin either.

My first thought was of those sliding, rectangular panels from IKEA. You could run a track along the entire length of windows. You should also consider what direction those windows face. If you're in a cold climate, and your windows face south, you could take advantage of that feature to help heat up your home. This page on passive solar window design might be helpful (includes info on tints): http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/windows_doors_skylights/index.cfm/mytopic=13360. Love the chickens, by the way.

Probably helps too to make one's bed. I like the center picture (matching couple) because the bedding looks so crisp and flat, it repeats the straight lines of their bedside tables.

I accumulate enough paper napkins from when I eat out that I don't have to purchase napkins. I recently bought some Twist European sponges in an effort to reduce my paper towel consumption. They work well for wiping down surfaces. But I'll still use a paper towel when it comes to cleaning the toilet or picking up a mysterious glop of food from off the kitchen floor. I should use cloth rags but have to get over the ick factor.

I remember reading some guy's account: His landlord kept the heat turned low in the winter, like maybe illegally low. So his solution, for when he'd be getting ready in the mornings, would be to run a hot water bath. The steam would heat up his apartment, and he didn't have to pay for the water. Wasteful, I know. But it did remind me that taking a hot bath does help me warm up.

Whenever I do a short-distance move, I try to pack my books into paper bags with handles (typically the bigger ones from a grocery or department store). I find it easier to tote many small bags rather than try lifting one heavy box of books up several flights of stairs.

Cool, I never even considered making my own. I dislike how so many hand sanitizers contain some sort of moisturizer. They don't seem to keep well, and I end up with this gummy moisturizer residue in my hands.

I've slept on couch cushions arranged on a hardwood floor. Also a cotton meditation mat or bedroll. Even sleeping bag on an area rug isn't too bad if it's for a night or two.

Here's another plan that I noticed on the Instructables Web site awhile ago:
Green Roofed Dog Veranda.

It's not an enclosed structure but I'm sure you could modify the plans for your needs.
