What is Your First/Last Chore of the Day?

Last year we moved from Massachusetts to New Mexico and from a 3000sqft modernist barn style home to a 1800sqft modernist pueblo style sustainably built energy efficient home that we had built. Although our old house was open plan there were still rooms we barely used. Our new home is so much more efficient to use and to maintain. We have pretty much 100% footfall in every part of the house every day! So, I guess we're living 2020 now, except for the voice and sensor control stuff which will be great to see evolve.

Grew up with line drying, can't imagine not doing it. Sure I do use the dryer, I can't stand crunchy towels, but I dry many thing in 'plein aire'. I have a wall mounted foldable, a floor standing foldable (which was my Mom's when she was in college in the mid50s!) and a collapsible umbrella type for outside that I can bring inside when it get too windy.

DovieAnn, I don't think the crunchiness is soap. It might be if too much is used or if the washing machine is not performing well, but mostly it's due to the fabric fibers aligning with gravity when they dry. Or at least that's what my old physics professor said it was.

I'm in the 'fugly' camp. WAAAAAY too busy for me and the colors are garish. Nope...pass.

Lovely...and I like it best w/out the shutters. Homes should evolve and not be frozen in time and this home has certainly matured well!

Personally, I liked it better before...it was clean and simple and modern. But to each their own.

I try to avoid my mother giving me anything. at. all. period. It never, ever turns out well. It's a case of minimalist vs maximalist.
Taste differences and her 'keep everything even if you don't use it' mentality buries her in stuff. If I can't use it or don't like it, I sell it or donate it or better yet, just don't buy it!

@bodicegoddess...Hahaha! Good one!

I think using a sawhorse for a dining table base is just too many legs.

A desk, maybe.

A work bench, sure.

But a dining table? nuh-uh! Instant crowding and figety-leg problems.

Staging makes such a difference to the 'story' of a home. Xtina, it's not blah, it's neutral, and it's very intentional. If there is too much color in a staged home the prospective buyer has a harder time seeing their own things in place.

LauraE...actually backless stool/chairs are better for your spine. They make you sit in a more upright position, stacking your vertebra over your pelvis. I switched to backless after learning that from my chiropractor and it does indeed help my back problems.

And I agree that the price seems insane...but that's NYC for you! Where I live that amoutn of money would buy you 3000+sq/ft on about 10 acres!

Well, for me, that would be a pretty easy decision to arrive at.

First, cost of gasoline weighed against retail of CL item if bought new, is a simple concept.

But, for me, what's more important, the environmental benefit of reusing the item against release of emissions to collect this reuseable item. 5 hours of driving could be quite a lot of C02 emission @19.5lbs/gal of gas, depending on the Uhaul's MPG...which is likely pretty low. Reusing something is not an automatically greener thing to do.

Well, I defnitely don't share a design aesthetic with Corina, but I sure do appreciate her abilities. The place is beautifully done and perfectly curated. And of course, anyone with kitties and Santa Maria di Novella in their house has to be one OK person!

Some of this I really love and some of it I really don't, but overall wonderful place, nicely done. It must be a fun place to live!

Here we go again with compulsive cleaning claptrap. Begbugs, 'wet accidents' and other such yuckiness aside, just washing the matress pad and sheets regularly is more than enough!

Beautifully done. Chris is a man after my own heart, if you don't use it, get rid of it, regift it, donate it, or repurpose it! Life is much nicer and easier to manage when you only have what you need. As william Morris once said, (and I paraphrase here) Have nothing in your home that you don't know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

My feedback, though...I agree that the fridge hinges should be switched, it would be MUCH more practical that way! The red curtain DO cover both windows and the wire shelving on the entrance wall need help. The wire make al lthe cool stuff look cheap. Maybe just a thin layer of luan noard painted white? That would give them more prescence and thus upshift the whole layout.

Just this year my mother finally sold her childhood home, which was a Sears Kit house, I don't know the model. But it was quite similar to this one. The kitchen made tears spring to my eyes. I could just see my grandmother making cookies. Great little houses...wonderful memories!

As much as I love the careful use of color, this room is a little TOO neutral for me as well. I applaud the careful well executed design, though.

But unlike Kellylc, I find the unmade bed 'off-putting'. It speaks to me of someone with a general lack of interest in hygeine. However, maybe being married to an engineer has made me 'rigid', but I never thought that the only place for 'sexy times' was a bed, made or otherwise!

this is most certainly NOT a 'moderist heaven' as Maggie M put it. It's just a dwelling built in the middle of the last century.
All that wood paneling would give me a n aneurysm, I'd HAVE to paint and or remove it. The kitchen cabinets give me the twitchies too. Too cluttered and closed in. The place is too cluttered for me in general.

But the inside is most likely not what this place is about. It's all the outside space that really counts. the natural beauty of the desert is astounding and it is instantly relaxing to be there. I love the pool. It must be awesome to be in it at night and gaze at the stars!
