So... to whom is AT attempting to appeal?

Really, Some of the recent house tours and features (including this one - which is expensively and indulgently fantastic) seem to betray what was once the heart and soul of the AT ethos.

I'd make some crack about this being AT and not Martha Stewart but you know, that would be smarmy.

And most importantly: Only photograph the most compact and controlled of vignettes so that the full space is never revealed.

Works for a certain blog I read...

Seriously, cell phone quality photos showing nothing more than small vignettes? Almost nothing abut the space is communicated through these photos.

Yup, this "simpler times" vacation house is certainly "saving the world, one room at a time"

I don't mean to rag on Robert and Ronnie as I find this home to be quite pleasant (I'd recommend replacing the white dining chairs with something a bit lighter and not so heavy) but I fail to see how this home ought to be featured on a site that was founded with the intention of helping those who RENT their APARTMENTS make their space better while not BREAKING THE BANK.

Meh, perhaps I'll just subscribe to Dwell.

The space is lovely, the pieces are interesting but the use of the space and objects together falls flat. Rather than building a cohesive and comfortable space, it feels as if they chose to turn every sight line into a vignette as if the only way to properly appreciate the space was through selective and framed photography. Having worked with many auction houses, this space feels set up for bidding...

It's really a shame as they have a collection of really interesting pieces and the light and layout of the living space seems wonderful.

The best cleaner I've ever used, in addition to one we use at work for cleaning artwork is Terg-A-Zyme.

It's a protease enzymatic cleaner that is natural and leaves no residue. It will break down any protein that exists.

Luckily in Chicago we have the Residential Landlord and Tenants Ordinance (RLTO) that is a hyper-specific set of rules and regulations as to what is and is not acceptable and what the remedies for various situations are.

Things like unacceptable odors and incomplete construction are covered by the RLTO. In general the RLTO is a very renter-favorable document that will severely penalize landlords for the slightest infraction or breach of rigid protocol.

Though landlords will profess to being in accord with the RLTO, I have never found one to fully understand just how extensive it is. For instance, if a landlord fails to provide the tenant with a copy of the RLTO at the lease signing, theoretically can be considered an invalid contract.

I have used the RLTO to take 2 landlords to court for illegally seizing my security deposit. In one case the end result was a judgement in my favor for 14 times the initial deposit plus lawyers fees.

Take a look at the RLTO if you live in Chicago, it will become your best friend.

It certainly feels warm and inviting without much pretension. That said, it's a bit too periodized for my taste. While there are many fantastic pieces ranging from beautiful furniture and hansom artwork to a wild collection of tokens, objects and tchotchkes, all of it together in the same house is a bit overwhelming and results in all of the aforementioned elements stepping on eachother's toes so-to-speak. Culling some of it out would undoubtedly result in each piece having a stronger voice and feeling less like a crowd of screaming...

Treat your art well!

An unframed painting or unmatted print just doesn't command the same attention as a piece of art that's been properly addressed. Further, matting and framing protects your art.

Take that painting you found in a shop to a conservator and have it cleaned! Repair the torn painting or broken sculpture... have the print cleaned by a paper conservator... Art, unlike artifact does not gain from the patina of age or wear... it only makes it look worse. Take notice of how well addressed all of the artworks in these photos are. Nothing is tacked to a wall, nothing is damaged or in poor shape...

A good conservator can transform what appears to be a loss into a masterpiece. Trust me, I know ;)

Geez,

by "waste of time" I was pointing out that there's no way to move or save this. I like it for what it's worth, but doing it right on the wall is unfortunate as if/when he wishes to change something the efforts will be lost. It's ephemeral, and while that's swell, methinks that investing this time ought to yield a product that can be saved...no?

What a phenomenal waste of time for a project that's not portable or salvageable...

I'd recommend buying some photographer's backdrop paper or a sheet rather than using the wall...

The downside is that the resin will inevitably scratch and scuff and wear rather poorly.

The upside is that it can potentially be polished out...
