I'm in the same boat as eskeloon...bought my three year old a toddler backpack for her first day of pre-school. It's a Hannah Andersson bag, and she loves it. I was totally surprised when I opened her bag that first day to find a note from her teacher: she needed a new full-size bag that would hold a 9x13 piece of paper. My daughter is devastated that she can no longer use the bag we had bought, and I find myself thinking, 'Really? She's three!'
