If you'd like the accent color to look more like a color and less like a neutral, you should look to the opposite side of the color wheel. That suggests blue, as the first commenter did. I would also consider aubergine for a pretty interesting combo. That would help shift the tile back to white, of that's what you're after.

No one mentioned stress food....I always stocked a few extra junk-food goodies along with the hurricane supplies. When the going gets tough, having something that feels like a treat, something you don't eat all the time, is a nice thing.

Also, coffee! I try to make sure I have beans ground and ready before the power goes, or a vacuum packaged bag of pre-ground coffee. You can boil water on a grill or gas stove and use a Melitta drip filter for the caffeine delivery. Get some UHT (boxed) milk for coffee and cereal if you need it. It's not great, but it will do.

It was the Emerill-style laughing and clapping on the show that killed it for me. Loved the content...hated the canned sound effects and coached applause.

I always make a White Spice Cake from The Cake Bible. It freezes beautifully and makes for a more-complex-than-poundcake base for fruits and artisan ice creams....instant desserts for unexpected company. The most recent round was the cake, brandied cherries and white rum ice cream. Wowza!

David Lebovitz has a couple recipes for financiers, as does the sequel to The Cake Bible, Rose's Heavenly Cakes. I am thinking almond financiers might be in order the next time I have a surplus of whites.

This no-cook pasta sauce is amazing.

But, if anyone is super health-conscious, you may not win any brownie points. It is delicious but indulgent.

I also love to make Salade Nicoise, preparing the cooked veggies in the morning (steamed green beans, roasted potatoes) and then adding grilled tuna before serving. I arrange it as a "composed salad" on a large platter and the presentation always gets big wows.

Whatever you decide on, be sure to make enough so that you have leftovers. Yummy stuff for lunch the next day will make you a hero! Good luck!

You've got my vote!

My nephew lives in one of those fabulous townhouses and I am in love with it. I'm across the river and your homes are the only ones that leave me feeling like I wish I lived in Amherst! You've done great things with your space.

Just wondering if GreenKey has anything to do with where you went to school...

The Cooks' Illustrated 24 Hour Omelet is very easy and amazingly good. Nothing healthy like a vegetable in sight, but you can worry about that the day after Christmas.

I had the same experience with Cook's a long time ago. It took quite some doing to extract myself from their automatic-shipping clutches. Sad to hear they're still up to their old tricks.

Every reputable resource on food preservation in the US says that oven canning is no longer considered safe. I know my friends overseas use all kinds of "unsafe" canning procedures, but it is hard to imagine an author/editor/publisher in this country ignoring so many expert opinions about something as important as food safety.
