I second LIEFIE on this - I always go for TJ's olive oil - they have several varieties, and the kind I get (President's Reserve, I think?) is a great value for under $6 a liter. Can't beat that! I also hear that Whole Foods in house brand oil is pretty good for everyday use, and inexpensive to boot. Can You Recommend an Olive Oil to Use in My Everyday Cooking? Good Questions |

Per my request, my mom would make me a sandwich of peppered salami, cheddar, and honey mustard on soft, floury white farmer's bread. But really, all her lunches were great - I could barely zip up my hello kitty lunchbox with all the food she packed me each morninf - all the way through high school. Between one of those ginormous cans of Arizona green tea, a thermos of leftovers and an ice pack, I coulda knocked someone out with the thing! Just Like Mom's: What Sandwiches Did You Grow Up With? |

This is by far my absolute favorite entry in small cool this year and I am glad to see it's on my home turf, too! What's the name of the paint color you've done the kitchen in, and secondly, what neighborhood do you live in? I'd guess somewhere on the north side, but really, the layout of your place is very unique and unlike any I've seen in the city as of yet. Mike's Original Details Small Cool Contest |

I second Cindy on this one. Made dressing as written and had to completely rework it - nice slaw idea, but way too sour! Quick Recipe: Broccoli Salad with Carrots and Currants |

As a big fan of thai flavors, I was curious to try this recipe. It was tasty - I went with the dipping sauce vs straight out of the bottle type fish sauce (I tasted the sauce plain and it was spot on). However, the finished dish tasted in no way Thai whatsoever. On the plus side, for those concerned about saltiness, I didn't find it to be markedly salty. Recipe: Thai-Style Brussels Sprouts |

I thought this recipe was really great! I subbed frozen ravioli since that's what I had on hand, but otherwise made it as written. It was a unique and elegant way to make use of the big bunch of rainbow chard in my CSA box, and aside from the poaching (which I always find tricky), it was easy-peasy. A word of caution: I picked up a 15 oz can of Fire Roasted Tomatoes from Trader Joe's intent on using it in this soup. Made it exactly as written, and holy wow...is it SPICY. And I usually LIKE spicy. Maybe TJ's tomatoes have peppers in them, or other brands of fire roasted tomatoes are a little tamer, but in the future I'll just use my tried and true Marzanos! This was totally satisfying, simple, and delicious. Even my boyfriend, a meat lover was a fan. I did add a drizzle of olive oil, salt and cracked pepper, but otherwise followed it as written. Will make again and again! Recipe: Lemony Pesto Pasta with Edamame & Almonds Six Ingredients (and Salt) |
