Wow, this place is awesome!! Do you have a blog or anything with more photos? Or closeups of the kitchen? Also, though we live hundreds of miles apart, you guys sounds like hilarious and fun people. Can I get an invitation to the block party??

Is that a medicine cabinet you are using for a mirror on the back wall? If so, ingenious way to create more storage!

Really? I used to live in DC and was involved in two great CSAs! The first one dropped off right at our offices (Nat Geo building downtown) and the other one had multiple pick up locations in MD (http://sandyspringcsa.com).

I wouldn't recommend using newsprint to pack plates. The ink can come off and stain china.
Also, I like to pack my china with sturdy cloth placemats and dish towels between the plates. This way you don't waste packing materials and can unpack your kitchen items together.

Also, mice can pretty much get into anything. So when I had problems with the critters, I stored a lot of food that didn't fit into airtight glass or metal containers in the microwave.

For some reason, I've been seeing a ton of round sofas on CL these days. Granted, those finds might be rare where you live, and getting upholstered items second-hand can always be a bit of a crapshoot in terms of six-legged hitchhikers (if you don't have the budget to reupholster). But I've found that if you put the vibe out there, the CL gods will hear you sooner or later.

Good luck decorating and I'd also second the house tour suggestion!

Anyone else feel like these posts are sometime just an excuse to showcase the MOST expensive stuff AT could possibly find, and then the second most expensive stuff they could find? That second rug is still almost 14 hundred frickin' dollars.

I second this idea! Here's a link to Dana's post about the washer and dryer, specifically: http://housetweaking.com/?s=washer

Mama G, can I ask what Ikea couch this was? I'm in the market for one as a primary couch and don't want to make the same mistake. Thanks!

Just an FYI, a lot of Method products are on sale right now at Target. I might pick up some pink grapefruit natural stone cleaner. Smells so good!

THIS is exactly what happened to me as well! After spending all that money on custom printed invitations, booze, food, etc, and not getting RSVPs, my cohost and I decided to stop throwing the party after 10 years.

Oh my, that is so beautiful. But it's really hard to find more info about these countertops on the Kohler website. Anyone have a direct link?

The timing of this article is scarily on topic as I was asking myself that last night at 4 am after throwing shoes at the ceiling of my bedroom in hopes that my upstairs neighbor would stop dropping bowling balls on the floor (or at least that's what it sounded like). Then I was thinking it again this morning as my downstairs neighbor had her daily screaming match on the phone. And I think it weekly when I have to sort the trash out of the recycling bins that my neighbors haphazardly throw in there. And daily everyone slams the outside door, which is six inches from my living room.

Ugh, yeah I think it's time to move....

When Do You Know It's Time to Move?
3/19/12 9:45 AM

I have moved around a bit, and after some truly horrendous landlord situations, have created a checklist that I use when I see an apartment and meet a potential landlord for the first time. The questions are all pretty basic: how long have you been a landlord, how many apartments or buildings do you manage, do you have a handyman on the premises, do you have an emergency line, have you ever been taken to court by a tenant, have you ever taken a tenant to court, etc.

I also try to see if the landlord knows the tenant/housing laws of the state or city where I'm renting. A simple question like "what do you do with the security deposit during the terms of the lease?" can let you know if the landlord is up on the law that, for example in CT, you have to put it in a savings account to accrue interest.

It's always telling how a landlord handles the fact that you are asking him/her these questions in the first place. In a good situation, a landlord will respect these questions and provide you with appropriate answers. But if a landlord balks at the fact that you are even bothering to vet them, that should send up some serious red flags.

I'd also check yelp. I've posted some of my more horrific landlord experiences there as well.
